Pinnacle/Pullback Albums

Trying to think of consecutive releases by artists where the former pushed boundaries, and the follow-up pulled back, for commercial/aesthetic/personal reasons, whatever.

my examples would be:

Tim Buckley- Starsailor/Greetings From LA
Ghostface Killah- Supreme Clientele/Bulletproof Wallets
Dylan(?)- Highway 61 Revisited/John Wesley Harding

not that the pullbacks are bad albums, just not as extreme as the pinnacles.

john wesley harding as an album is actually a lot more wierd than blonde on blonde. i think anyway. lyrically and musically, its just odd, and sounds like nothing else in dylan's catalogue. blonde and blonde was a step on from bringing it all back home and highway 61, in fact slightly less extreme than highway in my opinion. whereas JWH is a large step into the wierd.

why i always forget about "Blonde on Blonde" i'll never know, but the pullbacks are not necessarily 'bad' albums. the enigmas and dare-i-say, 'funk' of JWH lead me back to consider it more often than pre-crash Dylan. and i think "Greetings From LA" is an incredible Buckley album, it's just not as out as "Starsailor".

grandaddy - sophtware slump/sumday (not that sophtware slump "pushed boundaries" exactly - just that it was more complex/less one-dimensional than the follow-up)
