Non Rock Music Immersion Challenge

I have found that despite greatly enjoying the "non rock" music that I have, my music collection has way too few records of this sort. I'm going to attempt, for the next three weeks, to only purchase music that is NOT rock. You, ILX, should suggest some places to begin my total immersion therapy. I'll be attempting to consume at least a record a day.

I like:

  • Soulwax mixes
  • DJ Shadow
  • Whatever crap the DFA feeds me
  • Aphex Twin

I want to avoid new wave / rock bands with synths too.

Any good gamelan recordings. Folkways should help you there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Loretta Lynn or Merle Haggard.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

WAIT WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT.... GIVE ME A POINT OF REFERENCE FOR ALL THESE THINGS.

I'm not intersted in ALL non rock music, but more so in stuff like the stuff I listed.

PS - INDIE GUILT.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have the Rough Guide to the Asian Underground and dig that too.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

But for the whole of music that isn't rock the examples you listed seemed to cover a pretty narrow spectrum.

What you want is some great country music.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

you need buck owens

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dude, geteth yonself to some Amon Tobin pronto; a very creative and fluid and diverse-styled sample-music freak, gets as spooky and dirty as DJ Shadow and as wild and mechanical as Aphex Twin, but there's also lotsa extremely organic stuff in there, live (or at least live sounding) drums, saxaphones, etc. Listen to "Get Yr Snack On" or "Deus" and I bet you'll have bought Supermodified before the sun sets!

(he's also released some stuff under the name Cujo, btw)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, Buck Owens. And some Lefty Frizell.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh, yea! Amon Tobin has been something I've been meaning to check out for a while.

I've been meaning to get stuff by: Squarepusher, [mu]-ziq, Venetian Snares, Air

(I just got the "Will the Circle Remain Unbroken" thing, but have not listened to it.)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

A few favorites of mine:

Third Eye Foundation - Ghost, You Guys Kill Me or Little Lost Soul (all three are great.)

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

Autechre - Tri Repetae (2 CD set w/Garbage & Anvil Vapre eps, if you can find it.)

Paul Schutze- New Maps of Hell

I'm focusing this on electronic music. I only have three weeks.

I also liked that second Replikants record (super reccomendation; this album is totally overlooked!) and all the later Boredoms stuff.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have Autechre's garbage... is this worth getting?

i have been really into folk and indigienous music for the past year or so. i'd definitely recommend those "Secret museum of mankind" compilations on yazoo. they are really varied and have tons of crazy sounds on them. likewise, the "Music!" box set on wergo will give you a lot of places to further explore the sounds of the rest of the world (if you're interested).

Soft Pink Truth
Luomo
V/A - Shock City Shockers
DJ Pica Pica Pica

Ned, I was going to suggest gamelan music, before I saw your post. It must be in the air lately, because I've been thinking a lot about how much I'd like to finally start buying some gamelan music. I don't think it's exactly what JW is looking for, but he could still like it. (I would suggest going with Balinese gamelan as an introduction though.)

Cross-post: too late. Well, I think gamelan could have a lot of appeal to rock/electronic music fans anyway.

Al Andalous, Friday, 1 August 2003 14:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Rough Trade electronic compilation from last year is very good indeed.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

j fail: thanks. I'm not sure if I would like it though. I should AMG this.

Also, didn't I mention having DJ Picax3 stuff?

Pretty much why I suggested it. If you're an Aphex/Shadow fan, at the least, there's no reason not to check it out.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 August 2003 14:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

try some hrvatski, bogdan raczynski, and broadcast too(they're kinda 60's psych-rockish but with some seriously well done electronic accompaniments-album to get=noise made by people).

Felcher (Felcher), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

And there's no pesky foreign language lyrics normally (or ever?).

Al Andalous, Friday, 1 August 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've heard Broadcast name dropped a lot. Thanks.

What other Shadow / UNKLE stuff is worth getting. All I have is Preemptive Strike? I really like the stuff based around the organs (High Noon, Organ Donor, etc.). I've done a bit of this kinda thing myself. :D

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 15:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think the two CD set of Tri Repetae with the two EPs is by far one of my favorite electronic music collections. If you like Aphex and are curious about Autechre, I think it is the best place to start as it is a mid point between their early melodic, stripped down sound and the later work which is more digitally crunchy and abstract.

(If you need another opinion, check Ned's reviews of these Autechre releases at Allmusic.)

Ha, I feel proud of myself when I listen to rock music, as it happens so rarely these days. I would suggest John Zorn's group Masada for one, I've been on a kick lately. Especially Live at Sevilla 2001 or Live at Tonic. It's a really accessible mix of Jewish folk influenced melodies and jazz and bad-ass grooves.

On the electronic music tip, I'm still enjoying Astrobotnia a lot. I think I have vol. 2, it's really grown on me.

Also, I can never recommend Telefon Tel Aviv enough, it's the perfect mix of hot beats and gorgeous melodies.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Something like Masada is too close to the "white dudes with instruments in a tour van" vibe.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

!!

Er, have you heard them? It's not jam-bandy or whatever at all. They're all fantastic musicians...Dave Douglas is a star now, Greg Cohen played for Tom Waits, Joey Baron's played for everyone (inc. Bowie). I don't think they could come from a more 'authentic' place for the music.

I think I like DJ Rap, if the dude on the stupid college electronic music show got the set list right... What do you think about this?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fantastic Plastic Machine -- A japanese band on Pizzicato Five's label, is insanely catchy but at the same time infinitely dense. The closest I think between dance and ambient.

David Allen, Friday, 1 August 2003 18:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

dj rap = drum n bass (i.e. "jungle") --> is that what you heard?

"dance-friendly" --> "Circus Bells (Hardfloor Remix)" by Robert Armani, listen to it on headphones, if that don't knock your sox off, forget the whole experiment

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't mind drum and bass. I'm not even sure I can tell the difference between various electronic music genres. I could have confused DJ Rap w/ DJ Food though :/

I couldn't give a cannonical example of House, for example.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Friday, 1 August 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

If you've not heard Plaid, who are on Warp, then you've got to.

Any of the following are brilliant:

1998 Not for Threes Nothing
1999 Rest Proof Clockwork Warp
2001 Double Figure Warp
2000 Trainer Warp
2003 Parts in the Post

Sort of as complex as Autechre, but in a totally accessible way so you don't even notice it.

I could recommend others, but really I just want you to hear Plaid.

That list is brave in its wussiness, I sincerely mean that.

Are you sure you're not French??

Vous n'etes vraiment pas allemand?

(Actually, I ask myself the same thing every time I look at the bravewussy section of my collection. It all seemed so forward-looking at the time! Ah, futurism: always dated in hindsight, hahaha g'night folks)

It is all good stuff, a lot of it's just painted in very similar shades. You can easily burn out on it if you're not mixing it up with more visceral or rocking or whatever-you-wanna-call-it stuff ...

PS Mei, which is your fave?

Coldcut (label owners Black and Moore)--"Let Us Play"
Irresistible Force (Mixmaster Morris)--"It's Tomorrow Already"
DJ Vadim--"U.S.S.R.: Life From the Other Side"--more traditionally hip-hop-y than most other Ninja Tune stuff, but still a bit different
Cinematic Orchestra--"Motion"
Dj Food--"A Recipe for Disaster"
Antibalas--"Liberation Afro Beat, Vol. 1"--Afrobeat-ish, not your typical Ninjatune stuff

Rest Proof Clockwork is easily my favorite Plaid alb -- its cheer and playfulness is infectious, and usually overshadows its occasional deep melancholy. Also get Plaid's Peel Sessions, b/c Scoobs = best song ever. I am severely loving Parts in the Post, though. The Coba remix!

Don't 4get wimmin in electronic music! eg:
Neotropic - Mr. Brubaker's Strawberry Alarm Clock (I might've gotten the title wrong)
Andrea Parker - DJ Kicks (some great electro mixes)
Mira Calix - Prickle EP or Skimskitta (former is lush, melds ambient and IDM-proper in a rare way)

And finally autechre. I always suggest starting from Incunabula and progress chronologically, since one could fairly say that they get harder to listen to w/ each alb. Their EPs are almost all pure gold though, Garbage being stunning. The Anti EP gets underrepresented by everyone -- it's the most Orbital-ish of their EPs (though in some ways predates certain aspects of the Orbital sound). THeir PEel Sessions = gold too; "Milk DX" = ae with scratching! I'm getting a lot into Envane lately. Cichli Suite is brill. DON'T get Basscad EP. Also, get Gescom's (Autechre's umbrella project, sometimes they actually are Gescom, usu. not) Keynell EP.
