Thomas Fehlman/Theo Parrish Last Night In Detroit

Did any of the Detroit ILM'ers go to this, and if so, did I miss an incredible evening? I couldn't motivate my friend off his couch and didn't feel like going alone, so I missed. I'm kicking myself today.

I did make it out to this.

I talked to Sharif and this and the gig was supposed to go down in a new space over on Brush but the owner flaked out 48 hours before the gig. It happened over at 101 E. Baltimore instead and I think a lot of people did not wind up going because there was so little time to get the word out about the venue change. There was also a great deal of competition, DJ Sneak was playing at Panacea, there was an electro party with The Novamen at some space over on Michigan Avenue, and Rob Hood was playing at The Works.

Anyway I missed Mateo's set and about the first third of Thomas Fehlman's set. When I got there Fehlman was playing a lot of Kompakt and German microhouse. It was pretty much what you would expect; the sound was great and the records really punched on the system. The crowd was pretty much white, upper class, and suburban but they were still getting down. I danced through most of his set and did not pay too much attention to what was going on up front.

I was feeling a little sick(What I thought was a little cold last week, turned into the flu by this morning) by the end of his set so I went out to the car to lay down for awhile. I went outside about three tracks into Theo's set so I don't have much of an opinion about it. It was too bad really, because I was more interested in seeing Theo Parrish than Fehlman. Apparently he was playing some pretty off the wall stuff, my friends decided to leave about 25 minutes after I went outside.

Also, the venue was about half full. They drew a decent crowd but the place was by no means packed.

well i'm not surprised with rob hood AND dj sneak playing that nite too!

when you say theo parrish was playing "off the wall" tracks, you mean to say he's playing very drawn-out, abstract techy stuff or he's playing strangely eq'd obscure soul and funk tracks? or do you mean something else entirely?

You know, I really regret missing that. As much as I love Theo as a DJ and a producer, I've only witnessed him live once. Here he was, in a venue I'm very familiar with and that I like, not a club (don't really want to bother with those anymore), and I missed him again. No excuse.

Thanks for the report, Mike.
