its perplexing. for every 'step in the name of love' he makes, i have to endure ten hundred 'fiesta's. and why cant he get a songwriting partner to write his lyrics?

Fiesta is genius. Fiesta. There's a certain zen quality to Kelly's lyrics. Fiesta. The bluntness, simplicity, non sequiturs, offhand hooks. Fiesta. While his albums are definitely bloated, fiesta, I definitely think that Kelly is, at the very least, fiesta, one of the most rewarding idiot savants on this planet to listen to, fiestaaaaa

Don't worry!!! I just overheard this on the TV in the other room: 'But lately breakthroughs in the study of genius have been made. Professor (?)'s first step was to take thin slices of Einstein's brain and examine them under the microscope ...'

I belive I can fly
I belive I can touch the sky
Think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away,
bitch.

I think the quality of Kelly's music gradually declined more and more and more over time.
He was never anything real special musically. Didn't really have his own identity or anything, but 12 Play is an enjoyable album on some levels, and I guess it can be considered "good". "Bump 'n Grind" has a smooth groove to it, and Summer Bunnies is a neat summer jam. The atmosphere is very mellow and laid back.
Haven't heard all of his second album, though "Down Low" was still kinda neat.
But anything after I just haven't liked at all. Especially the complete garbage I've heard on TP-II, and afterwards. He's a good singer, but his knack for writing melodies (or, whoever writes his songs, but I assume it's him since he writes for so many other people too) has fallen off completely. His overall concept didn't change much, but the music just grew more and more soulless and boring over time, and tepid.
Some of the stuff was enjoyable here and there, but even lyrically, come on, cliche city on a lot of the stuff. "World's Greatest" is such a template feel good number I felt I've heard it a trillion times before. Same with I Believe I can Fly, even if the music is decent.
I don't like his music. I'm curious as to how anybody who likes him could consider him a "genius" either. "Genius" is reserved for a limited few, and certainly R. Kelly's music does not stand out from the crowd.
