Probably the Frente version?

how pointless. the original (the 12 inch mix anyway) contains some of the best noises ever.

Maybe New Order wouldn't license their version to VW?

well actually i was talking about the pointlessness of an acoustic cover in itself, though i'm sure the noise-less version is prob more comforting and song-y in a way that vw would want.

the frente version is great, though. easily the best thing they ever did (and i _liked_ absolutely kelly street_

I haven't heard it, but could it be the version by Devine and Statton??? Probably not. The world's not that cool.

Isn't it kinda like...the only thing they ever did?

Nah. They were big in Australia for a few years, and the Bizarre Love Triangle single was actually their come-back. Being a kiwi - we caught the gist of it..

chris andrews (fraew), Sunday, 2 May 2004 21:20 (twenty years ago) link

maybe it is the even as we speak version

New Order not only liscenced, but rerecorded the vocals for Blue Monday for a Sunkist commercial back in late eighties.

sexyDancer, Sunday, 2 May 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago) link

yup, its the frente version...just heard it

There were two New Order soundtracked adverts in a row on Sunday night, with this as the second one. I think it's very nice. So that's one-nil to Volkswagen.

How does it feel ... to drink it in the sun?

I think they're still a tad ashamed of that.

coco, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 08:52 (twenty years ago) link

Anyway, the original version of Blue Monday was also used for American Express' Blue Card.

Plus, I'm pretty sure I've seen an ad for Orbit chewing gum with an instrumental version of Your Silent Face ...

Hey, they have no actual shame you know.

They either do things, or don't do things.

There's nothing they regret, I'm sure.

(sorry, that was just where I ended up)

But New Order are famously stupid with their licensing. They license blue Monday, but it (allegedly) took Soulwax an age to negotiate a turn around on the refusal to license the Beach.

Yeah, exactly.

I wish it was the Even As We Speak version. On 7 inch vinyl, it works perfectly at either 45rpm or 33rpm - totally cool!

Rick Spence (spencerman), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago) link

I'm certain I recall a mid/late-80s New Order track (can't be sure which, offhand) soundtracking a Colgate toothpaste advert (i *think*...), in the UK at least, 10 or so years ago..
proper slaves to the corporate tv ad $ for years and no mistake, hehe..
