Can anybody recommend any foreign language 80s synth pop/ new wave. Similar to early Etienne Daho or early Mecano? Thanks.

In spanish: Esplendor Geométrico (Spain), Los Encargados (Argentina). In german: DAF. (well, I don't think they were so similar to Mecano, but I recommend you these ones)

Can only think of one: YUM (Belgium). Not very good. Think Plastic Bertrand sans punk. ;-)

The Names were a band from Belgium, who released a great single on Factory in 1981 called "Night Shift". I suppose they can't escape the later Joy Division / early New Order comparisons, but they were very good in their own right. However, they sang in English, so they probably don't fulfil the criteria of this thread.

Try http://houbi.com/belpop/grouplist.htm for information and sound clips from the Belgian Pop and Rock archives. The Crepuscule and Factory Pages at http://home.planet.nl/~frankbri/index.html has lots of information about synthpop and new wave bands from Belgium and the Netherlands. One day I'll learn how to do the blue writing for links.

Ooh, missed this!

Andreas Dorau is definitely worth a look. this is as good a start as any.

Desireless's 'Voyage Voyage' is the pinnacle of 80s eurosynthpop, I think. And Princess Stephanie de Monaco's 'Irresistable' is pretty fine too.

Do The Yachts count? Toured supporting Costello in his early years. The record "SOS" is classic. Tho I think I read somewhere that isn't its actual title, just what people called it cuz of the album art...

Also from Mexico, check out Flans. They were classic! I think of them as the Mexican version of Bananarama. Their first three albums are pretty good. I'd be a little careful with Yuri though. I'm from Mexico so I should remember more but I can't think of anything else now.

From Spain, I recommend Nacha Pop ("Persiguiendo Sombras", "Vistete"), La Union ("Lobo Hombre en Paris"), and Miguel Bose's late eighties stuff ("Salamandra", "Duende"). If you're looking for someone like Etienne Daho, he's your man.

Form France, there's Muriel Dacq ("Tropique"), Corynne Charby ("Boule de Flipper"), Indochine and Images ("Les Demons de Minuit").

Yeah, the two yuri songs I really like are "Yo te amo amo" and "tu y yo" anything later than that early stuff gets bad.

Some Finnish synth pop tunes:

Bogart Co.: "My Princess"
Dingo: "Sinä ja minä" & "Rio ohoi" & "Valkoiset tiikerit"
Yö: "Joutsenlaulu"

The Yö song is probably the best eighties new wave ballad I've ever heard. It's hyper-pathetic, it's got dramatic strings and vocal effects, and it ends with a flute solo! Simply brilliant.

Grauzone - Die Sunrise Tapes
... fast and furious German synth pop. Some very good New Wave hooks.

check out Alaska's stuff as Alaska and Dinarama and Fangoria

she was born in Mexico, but she moved to Spain and went on to become, alongside people like Pedro Almodóvar, one of the pillars of the early 80s, post-Franco Spanish 'movida madrileña', the overblown but still significant 'let's break all boundaries' movement in Madrid

she's pretty much the spanish-speaking heir to the Pet Shop Boys, but pretty good stuff, still
