if anyone were to ask people you know what band/artist you liked best, what do you think they would say? of course, this may be a wrong answer, but what would they be most likely to say?

My college friends would say Daft Punk or the Chemical Brothers. My friends from around where I live who are inflicted with my taste in my house all the time would say Spiritualized or Primal Scream.

Ronan, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Isabel rang just as I read this question so I asked her. She said "Magnetic Fields" which was true a while ago but isn't now. But she thought I just meant indie band - when I said it was anyone she said Five, Eminem and Outkast.

Otherwise - you tell me.

Tom, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Everyone would say Radiohead and everyone would be right.

Melissa W, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Of people who know enough to form an opinion, they would probably say Neil Young or Lou Reed. They would be incorrect, but I'm flattered that they took an interest.

Dave225, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They'd say Belle & Sebastian and they'd be half-right.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They would probably give the true answer, "those Royal Truckers you're always going on about" or Daft Punk.

Omar, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

apparently my trumpeting/burning cds of 'i love life' started a pulp revival in the office of one of my editors, so i'm sure some people would say that.

other possibilities: mudhoney, sugababes, scritti politti, l.a. guns. an ex of mine used to tease me relentlessly for being a big teenbeat fan - this was a year ago and i don't think i've bought any records that have come out on that label since (not because of the teasing but because of lack of interest).

maura, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Scott Walker.

And they'd be half right. In truth though I haven't listened in months, and have been mostly listening to very recent-ish stuff lately.

Nicole, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They'd say Belle & Sebastian and they'd be half-right

Same goes for me.

scott p., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I suspect most people who know me would say The Fall. And I would say no, you're wrong, it's James Brown, but they'd say no, no, you're deluding yourself, it's the Fall.

Douglas, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Les Savy Fav.

Alacran, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They'd say will oldham, in all his aspects. They'd be right.

misterjones, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Half the people I know would say The Cure, while the other half would say Prince. This pleases me.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

either rye coalition or les savy fav.

Brock K, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Depends on the person you ask. Some would say Fleetwood Mac. Others dEUS, Destiny's Child, Dead Man Ray or Britney Spears. Others would say "You listen to music?"

helenfordsdale, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Those few in the know would say T. Rex, and for the lack of a beter answer so would I.

Sean, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

My close, close friends would offer up Tsunami and/or Franklin Bruno, without hesitation. They're right, for the most part. Distant friends would probably say Pearl Jam or Soundgarden or something like that. They're sorta right (I'm still in denial). My parents/sister would probably offer up a long-winded answer along the lines of "noisy rock & roll stuff" - Mom would offer a more considered version of that statement; Dad would offer the short-sighted version.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

my flatmate would say lou reed, and might be right...my folks would say billy bragg, and would've been right up until I saw his concert last year and my firends - who knows?

Geoff, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They'd say Belle & Sebastian and they'd be half-right.
So which is it? Belle? Or Sebastian?

As for me, I think anyone who really knew me would say Rheostatics, and they would be right. People who knew me a long time ago would say the Cure, and they'd also have been right, at that point.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, *GIVE* a guess. It's not like I hide it. But I'd be intrigued to see what people think is my second favorite band (I do in fact have one, and after that it becomes The Collage of Goodness That Never Ends But Has Multiple High Points).

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd say it'd be The Cure, Ned...according to allmusic.com, you've actually RELEASED a few of their bootlegs.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

They'd probably say Mouse on Mars, and they'd pretty much be right. I don't talk about the Boredoms enough for people to know that I'm into them, but they're right up there.

Mark, Wednesday, 9 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Out of curiousity, what else has Ned Raggett Records released? My friends would most likely say Bjork or Depeche Mode because they receive the most publicity in the US out of my favorite artists.

Vinnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The two statements in my last entry are unconnected, of course. Although I'm sure Ned Raggett Records has put out some Depeche Mode bootlegs. :)

Vinnie, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Clearly allmusic.com has its flaws. I mean, I'm *flattered*...

The Cure is close, but that's not it.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Is it The Chameleons, Ned? Or Disco Inferno?

Tim, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

As for myself, a couple of years ago most would have said Bjork and would have been correct. More difficult now - Basement Jaxx would probably reach a nice compromise between my loving them and others being aware of a) them, and b) my love for them. Many might say Lil' Kim, because I often have her playing when people come over, if not Ludacris.

Tim, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yes it all depends on their knowledge. My friends would never say Hank Williams or Gram Parsons even though they are very high up there because I never play them when theres people in my house.

Ronan, Thursday, 10 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

five months pass...
for a long time people would definitely have said stereolab, and they would have been right. now, i've realised they would say autechre, but it is not so simple now

gareth, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"techno crap"

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ned: Smashing Pumpkins?

sundar subramanian, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Surprised I missed Tim's old response. The Chameleons is in fact the correct answer.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Smiths.

Tim DiGravina, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Most of my friends would say Pulp, but some would say Al Green, I think. That'll do.
