If you made a CDR of all of a band's/artist's title tracks, then which band/artist would have the best one?

Alright, Bowie is going to be a hard one to beat here. That tracklisting in full:

1. Space Oddity
2. The Man Who Sold The World
3. Ziggy Stardust
4. Aladdin Sane
5. Diamond Dogs
6. Young Americans
7. Station To Station
8. "Heroes"
9. Scary Monsters
10. Let's Dance
11. Tonight
12. Never Let Me Down
13. Black Tie White Noise
14. Outside
15. Heathen
16. Reality

OK, so it tails off rather dramatically at the end. Still, this would make a pretty awesome album.

Too long, not enough quality control on this CD. Any Bowie compilation with "Tonight" on it is not good.

jz, Friday, 16 December 2005 10:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh "Tonight" is all right...

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 December 2005 10:27 (eighteen years ago) link

1. "The Clash" (subst. "We are the Clash" from Cut the Crap, as the title is in the song title)
2. "Give them enough rope" (subst. London Calling, as it has the word "give" in it,
3. London Calling. Oh, hang on.
4. Sandinista (Washington Bullets)
5. Combat Rock ... ummmm....
6. Cut the crap...
7. From

Actually, forget it.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 December 2005 10:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Can't be bothered to do the tracklisting, but Lou Reed might win the day. White Light/White Heat, Berlin, all of Metal Machine Music, Street Hassle, Coney Island Baby...

jz, Friday, 16 December 2005 10:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Right, try again.

Chicago. Substitute "Chicago now" by the fall.

Fuck Bowie. It's Parliafunkadelicment thang:

Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow
Maggot Brain
America Eats Its Young
Cosmic Slop
Up for the Down Stroke
Standing on the Verge of Getting It On
Chocolate City
Let's Take It to the Stage
Mothership Connection
Hardcore Jollies
Dr. Funkenstein
Tales of Kidd Funkadelic
Funkentelechy / The Placebo Syndrome
One Nation Under a Groove
Motor Booty Affair
Gloryhallastoopid
Uncle Jam Wants You
Trombipulation

... that's what I call entertainment

We Buy a Hammer For Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 16 December 2005 11:05 (eighteen years ago) link

Was about to say Prince, then I remembered Graffiti Bridge...

Jay Smooth (jsmooth995), Friday, 16 December 2005 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Let's Try ... AC/DC

JailBreak
High Voltage
Let There Be Rock
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
(no title track for powerage. too bad, it's my favorite album)
Highway to Hell
Back in Black
For Those About to Rock ...
Flick of the Switch
Fly on the Wall
Who Made Who
That's the Way I want my Rock n' Roll ("blow up your video" is the pre-chorus which is the title of the album)
Razor's Edge
Ball Breaker
Stiff Upper Lip

Kinda falls apart after "For those about to Rock ..." but it was worth a shot.

bsj30 (bsj30), Friday, 16 December 2005 16:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I was gonna say AC/DC, but that P-Funk list is pretty damn insurmountable.

A|ex P@reene (Pareene), Friday, 16 December 2005 19:35 (eighteen years ago) link

COLTRANE.

Blue Train
Giant Steps
My Favorite Things
Africa
Impressions
Crescent
A Love Supreme
Sun Ship
Kulu Se Mama
Ascension
Om
Stellar Regions

I'm sure I'm leaving a few out, but you get the idea.

Yeah, I would definitely be willing to suffer through "Graffiti Bridge" for "Dirty Mind" "Controversy" "Sign Of the Times" "Purple Rain" etc. etc. ETC.... Prince would be a great one for this, for sure.

sweet earth flying (sweet earth flying), Friday, 16 December 2005 19:44 (eighteen years ago) link

THe XTC one would be really short:

1. 25 O'Clock

At least, it would be around 4 minutes of fun though.

dali madison's nut (donut), Friday, 16 December 2005 19:49 (eighteen years ago) link

Tom Waits:

Closing Time
Heart of Saturday Night
Nighthawks at the Diner
Foreign Affair(s)
Small Change
Blue Valentine(s)
Heartattack and Vine
(This) One('s) from the Heart
Swordfishtrombones
Rain Dogs
The Black Rider
Alice

I'd listen to that.

erklie, Saturday, 17 December 2005 01:39 (eighteen years ago) link

This is actually a really good thread idea... skews it towards artists with a large discography, but only some of those... The Fall barely have a single track that matches the album title.

Neil:

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Deja Vu (CSNY)
After The Gold Rush
Harvest
Time Fades Away
Tonight's The Night
On The Beach
Long May You Run
Comes A Time
Everybody's Rockin'
Old Ways
This Note's For You
American Dream (CSNY)
El Dorado (EP)
Harvest Moon
Sleeps With Angels
Looking Forward (CSNY)
Silver & Gold
Are You Passionate?
Prairie Wind

Don't know enough of his later stuff to say whether this is any good, Bowie and P-Funk and Waits still rule the thread...

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 17 December 2005 03:05 (eighteen years ago) link

NoMeansNo's wouldn't be too bad:

1. Sex Mad
2. The Day Everything Became Nothing
3. Small Parts Isolated And Destroyed
4. 0 + 2 = 1
5. The Sky Is Falling And I Want My Mommy (feat. Jello Biafra)
6. Would We Be Alive? (Residents cover)
7. Dance Of The Headless Bourgiouse

Not the winner here, though.

dali madison's nut (donut), Saturday, 17 December 2005 08:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Black Flag wouldn't fare too badly either...

1. Nervous Breakdown
2. Jealous Again
3. Six Pack
4. Damaged I
5. My War
6. Family Man
7. Slip It In
8. In My Head
9. Loose Nut
10. The Process Of Weeding Out

dali madison's nut (donut), Saturday, 17 December 2005 08:43 (eighteen years ago) link

The Cure?

1. Three Imaginary Boys
2. Boys Don't Cry
3. Seventeen Seconds
4. Faith
5. Pornography
6. The Walk
7. The Top
8. Disintegration
9. Never Enough
10. Bloodflowers

dali madison's nut (donut), Saturday, 17 December 2005 08:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I must, say Joy Division.

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Saturday, 17 December 2005 09:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean, I must say, Joy Division wins.

The Cure?
1. Three Imaginary Boys
2. Boys Don't Cry
3. Seventeen Seconds
4. Faith
5. Pornography
6. The Walk
7. The Top
8. Disintegration
9. Never Enough
10. Bloodflowers

How can you justify "never enough"?

Bend the rules a bit and you can add the following:

"Close to Me" (for the "head on the door" lyric)
"Hey You!!!" (for the "kiss me kiss me kiss me" lyric)
"To Wish Impossible Things" (for the "wish" ref)
"Killing An Arab" (for the "Standing on a beach"/"staring at the sea" lyrics)

that's pretty good, all in (he says, of his favourite band).

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 17 December 2005 10:02 (eighteen years ago) link

am i the only one that rates "never enough" as one of the cure's best moments? the song rocks.

dali madison's nut (donut), Saturday, 17 December 2005 10:12 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, great song an' all - esp the 12" - but it's not a title track whichever way you slice it...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 17 December 2005 10:55 (eighteen years ago) link

The Fall?

1. Room to live
2. Shift Work

mark grout (mark grout), Saturday, 17 December 2005 18:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Motorhead!

1. "Ace of Spades"
2. "Overkill"
3. "Bomber"
4, "Iron Fist"
5. "Another Perfect Day"
6. "Orgasmatron"
7. "Rock'n'Roll"
8. "1916"

You could do worse.

You'd get a nice EP out of Joni Mitchell, but I'm one of those people who thinks her '80s work is terrible, so we're really talking more of a Sub Pop Single of the Month.
