minimal techno on the ambient 5 am bar music side of things... S/D

I know about (and must buy!) the Dinky album, but not quite that. I mean stuff like actually beaty and suitable for just trailing along to mentally with a beer, not quite dancing, but not quite stopped.

what is it?

man this thread sucks already

So you want coffee table microhouse?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't all microhouse coffe table?

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:48 (eighteen years ago) link

wink wink

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 4 September 2006 23:48 (eighteen years ago) link

lol... I'm not sure what I want!

some tracklists from (early morning) that funny cafe in Kreuzberg which is apparently sorta famous! pOn de river.

The Tiefschwarz Fabric 29 is pretty lethargic.

coffee table microhouse...wouldn't that be like total 1-6 on thick slabs of colored vinyl all tied up with a furry polka dot ribbon?

arjun (arjun), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 01:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't really consider Dinky part of what you're looking for personally, so I don't really get what you're looking for? Try A Made Up Sound's Sunday/Late Drive single. Sunday makes perfect sense here, to me.

I'm sorta shilling here, but this might fit the bill:

Microcosm Music

Mmm I can't wait to drink an espresso to that.

Kaito's ambient stuff?

hector (hector), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

ah .. I was thinking of that first Dinky album "Melodies Venosas"(sic)(which I've only listened to small clips of on bleep.com but which sounded fantastic).

trees "late drive" is probably the closest thing so far to what I was thinking of. But maybe even down a few more bpm from that.

bad hair day house (fandango), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:56 (eighteen years ago) link

actually skimming a few more of these tracks... Philpot seems very close to the sound I've been trying to recall in my head.

bad hair day house (fandango), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Triola and Burger/Ink

why not just put on FSOL - ISDN?

cuz (brother loves dub), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 19:07 (eighteen years ago) link

FSOL is not at all the sound I'm thinking of here (fwiw, I don't really care where the thread goes from here...)

but this Philpot & Microcosm stuff pretty much is, thanks ILM!

On the more soulful yet minimal side, I really love this record. It's got one track with pretty lame rapping on it, but rest of it is great.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 07:10 (eighteen years ago) link

And I think it fits the "not quite dancey, not quite stopped" description very well.

Going further into history, you might enjoy Patashnik by Biosphere - it's more beaty and techno than some of his other stuff.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 07:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Agreed. Microgravity before this is pretty cool as well. What about Porter Ricks as well - stuff like Port Gentil?

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I would suggest most of the thinner catalog: www.thinner.cc

Work backwards, though. Some of their older stuff is meh.

Marc Leclair - Musique pour 3 Femmes Enceintes
Gas - Pop, maybe? Probably too fall-asleepy.

glad you thought 'late drive' sort of fit the bar, fandango.

eighteen years pass...

Thread should have more posts!

The Marc Leclair album mentioned upthread is gorgeous (ambient end of BoC, Skee Mask, Sora, kind of).

god knows what I meant back in 2006... probably not even techno (facepalm)... house, perhaps something between a chill out set and a warm up set

most of this set might be closest approximation

Just bought this album on Bandcamp after checking it out via Philip Sherburne's writeup on his Substack
(https://futurismrestated.substack.com/p/futurism-restated-100-microtonal):

"Girl Scout Cookies - 1

The (don’t-call-it) minimal revival just keeps coming. (A quick aside: I really need, we really need, a better word than 'minimal' for this stuff, because it wasn’t the right word in the first place, and I don’t want the wrong assumptions from the first wave to get baked in all over again. But that’s a topic for another day.) Girl Scout Cookies are (is?) part of the mysterious Munich crew gathered around Ro.Pax, wrk.dat, et al., but beyond that, I couldn’t tell you much...

Rather than zeroing in on a single given sound, as Huerco S. did with his springy and refined Loidis project, Girl Scout Cookies survey the field: I hear bits and pieces of Move D & Benjamin Brunn, the Bionaut, Farben, Soul Center, Isolée. While the proportions change from track to track, it’s all heavily repetitive and hypnotic, lush and loop-heavy, with filters and delay applied to add slipperiness and buoyancy. Perhaps there’s even an occasional touch of very old-school progressive house ('Jain'), where it overlapped with early-phase tech-house (Circulation’s colors series, say)? Maybe I’m imagining it, but I guess part of what appeals to me about this release is the way it seems to ooze between established cracks. The closing 'Max Beef Noodles' picks up the resonant baton from old Force Trax and Kompakt releases—MRI’s great Rhythmogenesis, perhaps—while 'Neuromancer' is just the sort of fogged-out Chain Reaction homage I can never get enough of."

That sounds great. The brilliant Ghost Dubs album Sherburne reviewed last year could fit here, though definitely the heavier end of things.
