Underwhelmed after 1.5 listens.

I'm afraid of the Thirsty Ear curse (amazing lineup, kinda half-assed music).

i saw one of their first shows live.

i enjoyed it....i think it was maybe their fist live show...it was a little muddled...going lots of different directions at once...half the time it was some sorta fusion jazz shit, then almost metal (fratzke is in a pretty awesome doom metal instrumental band called zebulon pike) and then math rock type stuff....but interesting, i'll be curious to hear this.

Fratzke rules

I picked up a copy over the weekend and find it very fresh and exciting. It's music that refuses to fit neatly into a box. They do have a myspace page that you can hear some tunes for yourself.
Fratzke totally rules, check out the solo at the end of European Ambulance. It's an amazing lineup and totally KICK ASS music.

oh okay then i guess i was wrong, thank you "stanley"

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 03:10 (seventeen years ago) link

hmmm....I hate jazz fusion, but I like KICK ASS music, so as you can imagine Gang Font presents quite a dilemma.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

It's not fusion, not at all; more like occasionally-spazzy post-rock. Not a lot of jazz here either, unless you count the Tony Williams breakdowns that happen every once in a while. More common are the indie-rock slash Hüsker-isms. It ain't bad...just kinda pretty good instead of OMG WOW to me.

i know, i know, i was just riffing on the spambot...

i liked 'em live, want to check it out.

Excuse me for having a differing opinion, I'll try and rein in my enthusiasm. Please be as underwhelmed as you want "dimension 5ive".
Indie-rock slash Husker-isms? There isn't anything about this band that sounds like Husker. Would Husker fans (if there are any) even get it? And what is Norton in this line-up for anyway, WTF has he ever done.
They must need somebody to drive the van.
Ain't bad...just kinda pretty good, but Fratzke rules.

Stanley, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 18:39 (seventeen years ago) link

there's plenty of huskerisms in the first few tracks stanley, but more late-husker instead of early speedthrash variety. just let them come to you, they will arrive.

Dimension 5ive, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago) link

ok stanley sorry...yr first post had a "Street Team" feel, i think that's what the response was for.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 19:42 (seventeen years ago) link

oh you mean when they were trying to sound like XTC, I can sort of hear it, but the Gang Font stuff sounds much darker to me.

Stanley, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 19:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Well it seems I've killed this thread. So all I have left to say is that after a week of repeated listens I still can't hear any huskerisms, although my comments on Norton were uncalled for, he does add something that works better than I originally thought. This is definately a showcase for King and Fratzke to stretch on their rock chops.
I'm still very excited about the disc and think it gets better the more I listen to it. I just thought Jordan deserved a chance to hear both sides, and hopefully he'll hear the disc for himself and make up his own mind.
They never told me at the Spambot army recruiting office that it would be so lonely out here on the street, where's the team, I need back-up.
