classic, i guess; search everything pre-98 (including live shows around the time of "angels..."), destroy almost evrything since?

Good question. If we haven't done him yet, about time we did. Classic for me on the strength of "Maxinquaye" and "Pre Millennium Tension" alone. Tricky is one of the few musicians who make me think hard about words and their context in song.

I also own "Nearly God" but haven't played it much. I thought everyone hated "Angels..." (not heard myself). However, I've read enough good things about "Juxtapose" that it is on my list of things to buy if ever I see it going cheaply.

Maxine quaye is absolute classic. Have only heard the singles off the other ones, and they're not bad at all. 4 Real, Broken Homes and Trickykid are all outstanding. May invest in some post-Maxinequaye material soon. Any recommendations?

Maxinquaye never in fact did much for me outside of a couple of the singles -- Pre Millennial Tension remains my favorite in comparison, more focused, more interesting, whatever it is there's something going on.

That all said, I have since realized that the Notorious B.I.G. essentially trumped him with "Suicidal Thoughts."

Maxinquaye and PreMillenium Tension are classics, after that there's a sharp dropoff. Angels With Dirty Faces lacked a certain something, the other releases have lacked alot. Attempted collaborations with hip-hoppers and alt-rockers have largely been either negligible or regrettable (even "Broken Homes" isn't half of what it should have been). I think he's got another classic in him, but I'm not holding my breath.

My experience with Tricky is odd in that "Angels with Dirty Faces" was the first record I heard by him, giving me the impression that he was fucked up and unlistenable, but got away with it. I grew to really like its dismalness and when I dug up his earlier work, it seemed mild to me. I'd still recommend his first two albums... certainly over his last two. "Juxtapose" really should have sounded different, considering all the hype that Muggs and Grease were working to make it Tricky's definitive hip hop piece.

Classic. Toby is pretty accurate, but nobody has so much as mentioned the wonderful early stuff with Massive Attack. Obvious, but needs including.

splooge (thesplooge), Sunday, 3 October 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago) link

haha - i said much the same thing on the "real gone" thread splooge except that i was thinking of "Ponderosa" - if only they had made a record together in the mid-90's.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

it could still be done, but i think tricky is too far gone now (exactly where i dunno) to make a really great record with anyone anymore.

tricky was such a prick with me, we were talking about music and smoking together for a few minutes in the Cadbury in Bristol (his sister works there, it was Xmas eve), then his friends turned up and he switched into a evil-tricky mode and asked 'who da fuck i waz' and offered to 'kick my fucking head in'.

Just tossed all my Tricky shit into the yearly sell pile... I can't even bear to listen to Maxinquaye or Pre-Millennium Tension anymore, it all just sounds so insufferably dull and lifeless, stoned out of its mind and worse off for it.

Saw Tricky open for Devo a couple years ago and it was possibly the biggest example of AWFUL opening act + INCREDIBLE headliner that I've ever seen.

This article makes a pretty good case for why Tricky fell so far from grace after Maxinquaye:

It wasn't really him doing much of the music.

Due to unforeseen US Visa issues preventing from him entering the country, Tricky is postponing his upcoming US tour dates in support of his new album False Idols. The rescheduled dates will take place in October, when Tricky is in the US to play Treasure Island Music Festival and Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit.

I rated the "time 2 dance" single from a couple of years ago. Not mindblowing but nice, breezy but still tricky-y
