why isn't The Face running the country ?

if you go to www.rocklist.net you'll see what i mean. basically, say what u like about the '80's style mag' and all but they were right on the money every step of the way in terms of 'singles of the year' *every* year. take 1987 4 example - in their top 20 that year they had prince, public enemy, the smiths, rakim, LL cool j, sly + robbie, phuture (acid trax), and coldcut.

hats very much off!

if u look at *any* other paper/mag from the era on that site they're *way* off by comparison. if the face said/says it was/is good - by god it WAS good.

I find the lack of My Bloody Valentine disturbing.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 1 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I don't think MBV released any of its Creation era stuff until 1988...

I agree to some extent - a lot of people allow The Face's self- conscious attempts to be on the cutting edge to obscure the fact that most of the time they get it right. The singles and albums reviews are both probably the shortest and the best of any of the Brit mags in circulation. Also it's the only major magazine that has even bothered with UK Garage, let alone covered it well, so I have special sympathy for it.

Hey Ned, on this page: http://www.rocklist.net/theface.htm, The Face lists cover those years. Check '91.

I live in Hoxton, which is exactly what would happen if The Face were allowed to run the world. Please, dear god, no, bite your tongue.

Check '91.

*does so* Galliano?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I just saw the Face on the newstand. It's a Drugs Special--isn't it, like, always a Drugs Special at the Face/ID?

Ben Williams, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I remember a great remix of a Galliano track, "Skunk Funk" if I'm not mistaken. Not exactly a reason to leave Loveless off of any 91 list though. The rest of the Face lists are grate. I'm trying to track down this "Afrika" by History feat Q-Tee (who I'm assuming is the one from "Filthy" by St Etienne?).

Spencer Chow, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

yep same one. it's a bit preachy if memory serves though. but yeah it does make you run to audiogalaxy thinking 'hmmm a song from 1990 in betwen ghetto heaven and kinky afro in the top 10 called 'jazz thing' i'm having that!'

piscesboy, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

whoa!, that's *exactly* what I was thinking. Now where's that Soul Family Sensation CD at?

Spencer Chow, Monday, 3 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

five years pass...

...i still miss it (sniff).

They had it in the school library, it was the only fashion magazine I have ever had any interest in at all. Remember when they had that trend of using really average looking models about ten years back? (Still dead skinny though)

I suppose it's a shame there are no major unisex mags anymore, the rise of the awful lad mag has seen to that.

Bodrick III, Thursday, 14 February 2008 20:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I miss The Face too, there's really nothing exactly comparable.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 14 February 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, who would have thought that the '00s would be so shit that we actually miss The Face?

Bodrick III, Thursday, 14 February 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago) link

is ID still around?

henry s, Thursday, 14 February 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, and Dazed and Confused.

i-D, always great visually but not so hot with the writing.

Bodrick III, Thursday, 14 February 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago) link

For those first ten or so issues it might have been the best music rag ever. Wish I still those...
