Is it pointless to be waiting for a new Nirvana to take us out of this abyss? I myself is ambivalent about this becuz there's a lot good music out there that is being ignored by lazy people who don't listen to any music outside of what's being offered by Top 40 radio, that's their loss not mine. But at the same time I do believe that bands like Super Furry Animals and Mum should be exposed to a wider audience. Another thing is that Clear Channel's dominance in radio broadcasting makes it impossible for a new Nirvana to appear on the scene.

Something will come along, but it won't resemble Nirvana's appearance in 1991. I don't know yet who or what it will be, but the music market's primed for some kind of major upset.
And I don't have any problem with Top 40 radio. Some people just don't care as much about music as others do. Top 40 is for them. They go to a store in the mall and buy their new Celine Dion cd because they honestly don't want to hear anything "challenging".
They just want to relax with something playing in the background. No problem.
Clear Channel's monopoly is another issue altogether, though...which would give me a headache if I started ranting about it.

I doubt that if there is a "new Nirvana" that they'll sound anything like Nirvana. That's the whole point, isn't? Something fresh and different (even though they weren't). I mean, if ya really wanna invite scorn, you could say that Britney Spears was the "next" Nirvana, being that she spearheaded (pardon the pun) the wave of teen-pop that overtook mainstream airwaves just as boldly as Nirvana did with the alterna.corps. In that instance, it's already happened.

Moreover, the whole evolution of music needn't be cyclical. There doesn't have to be and there isn't necessarily going to be a "new" Beatles or VU or Ramones or Sex Pistols or Gang of Four or whomever. If you wanted to be a real cynic, you could say that in terms of rock'n'roll, it's all been done.

..which is why you should relegate that copy of Nevermind to the coaster tray and buy more Killing Joke albums, you fucking flannel-clad penguins.

My answer is vague because the question is pointless. If there is going to be a next big phenomenon, chances are that it won't take the shape you expect it to nor appear when you want it to. Moreover, it needn't happen at all.

that's the point i think. you can't reinvent rock with a rock band that sounds like everything before it. that's why nobody really cares about the whole "garage rock revolution".
