Not a huge fan of any of the three. But voting Saunderson.

Paul in Santa Cruz, Thursday, 4 June 2009 07:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Voted Juan and dropped an SB.

C-Word Waddell (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 4 June 2009 07:15 (fifteen years ago) link

If we're looking at their overall careers, I'll say Juan, though Derrick (and maybe Kevin too) has one or two individual tunes that are better than anything Juan's done. Still, Juan.

Tuomas, Thursday, 4 June 2009 07:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Atkins.

Matos W.K., Thursday, 4 June 2009 08:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Juan... like Tuomas said - it's all about the consistency. Model 500 & Cybotron really stick with me. I want to go dig up my those Transmat comps though...

Of late I've been listening to May the most but it sort of cycles a bit for me.

Tim F, Thursday, 4 June 2009 08:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Atkins > Saunderson > May (> most people ever)

including Craig and Mills could've made it more interesting

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Thursday, 4 June 2009 11:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Saunderson for consistency and for Good Life, Ahnongay, The Groove That Won't Stop etc.

mmmm, Thursday, 4 June 2009 12:20 (fifteen years ago) link

kinda sad when you think that these three guys have influenced so much of what we praise and slam on boards like this, yet will probably inspire what, 20 votes or so?

that said, I'll go with Mayday...I know, I know: he's the thoroughbred who refuses to run, but nothing sums up the spirit of Detroit for me than "Strings Of Life", in its many forms...

This was tough but I voted based on who I go back to listen to the most: May.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Thursday, 4 June 2009 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

derrick may, easy.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Atkins choice is clear for me....May is sitting on more than a dozen gems and won't release them, so i have a thing against him....

Saunderson has turned into a joke, imho.

the table is the table, Monday, 8 June 2009 23:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Atkins. Almost Saunderson just for "Good life" which must have been one of my first exposures to dance music when i was a little kid and it was all over the radio for a few years.

Don't kill me but I never really got in to Derrick May.

"Saunderson for consistency

― mmmm"

he is definitely the most consistent of them these days: he always sucks.

really, he is by far the inferior of the three. don't get me wrong, i love a good number of things that he did. but jesus, juan and derrick are pretty ridiculous. i couldn't pick between the two of them.

Damn, blow out.

Mark, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago) link

another (late) vote for Saunderson - over the years I switched allegiance from May and Carl Craig. "Info World" (Model 500/Atkins) was one of the first Detroit tracks I heard though (on Network's 1990 BioRhythm 2 comp).

Paul, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago) link

blow out! can't say i'm too surprised though.

society for cutting up (tricky), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 03:31 (fifteen years ago) link

top 10 saunderson tracks in no particular order

the late great, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:43 (eleven years ago) link

feel like may's peaks (nude photo, it is what it is, beyond the dance, the beginning) are higher than saunderson's peaks but i think it'd be tough to come up with ten may or atkins tracks that match that saunderson top 10

the late great, Thursday, 21 November 2013 17:45 (eleven years ago) link

I refuse to rank them!!

brimstead, Friday, 22 November 2013 01:18 (eleven years ago) link

Carl Craig is by far the best techno artist to come from Detroit.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 22 November 2013 03:05 (eleven years ago) link

this is Atkins May Saunderson thread son

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 03:47 (eleven years ago) link

I was the first person to mention Carl Craig on this thread? Ok, thread police.

Derrick May has the best individual tracks, Juan Atkins the best Album and Saunderson the most consistent run of singles. None of them come close to the incredible career output of Carl Craig.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 22 November 2013 05:24 (eleven years ago) link

ok post your 10

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 05:35 (eleven years ago) link

home entertainment
elements
domina
bug in the bassbin
a wonderful life
desire
ladies and gentlemen
chicken noodle soup
4 my peepz
throw

but on another day you could easily sub in another 10 and that's where he has the edge. but yeah, not one of the og 3 so wrong thread maybe.

ewar woowar (or something), Friday, 22 November 2013 11:15 (eleven years ago) link

i'm not disagreeing that craig is better than saunderson btw

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

my top 10 would look pretty different though

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

where would you put eddie fowlkes?

my top 10 would look pretty different though

Once again, that's what makes C2 top dog imo.

my top 10 craig tunes

neurotic behavior
chicken noodle soup
4 my peepz
the climax
my machines
rushed
ladies & gentlemen
at les
relevee remix
???

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 17:55 (eleven years ago) link

i think i am more into saunderson right now because most of my dance music consumption is in the form of making mixes right now and i am just much more likely to use a KMS track than a CC track

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 17:56 (eleven years ago) link

home entertainment, i guess

the late great, Friday, 22 November 2013 17:57 (eleven years ago) link

Considering the short period may actually put records out for... Derrick May by a mile
