What's this mothafuckin rap game without L?

myndbloom, Monday, 5 October 2009 14:48 (fifteen years ago) link

big l is great but honestly i feel like kool g was so crucial to creating the template from which big l worked, it's gotta be kool g rap.

though this is probably one of those "hey 10 dudes on ILM that actually post to threads like this, how old are you?" type poll results.

Lifestyles ov da Poor and Dangerous is better than anything Kool G put out, but if we're talking catalogs I'd have to go with Kool G. I don't know, it feels messed up to slight Big L for getting shot, though...

He only made two records before he died and they are both stunning. (Also both available on spotify if you can use it.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 07:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I though he made only one album while alive. The Big Picture was produced posthumously, on a couple of tunes you can hear the guest rapper saying "rest in peace, Big L" or something like that.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 11:59 (fifteen years ago) link

Ok yeah sorry. Still both are essential listening.

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 12:00 (fifteen years ago) link

dude shakey u would like big l i bet.

listen these guys are both fucking amazing.

but yeah 4, 5, 6 is amazing and honestly i would maybe put Wanted: Dead or Alive slightly above the more canon Road to the Riches....

also Live and Let Die brought sort of west coast gangsta type influenced stuff to the east coast perspective 2 years before biggie's ready to die.

I like all 3 a lot. RttR I rate above the followups mainly due to Marley Marl's production. EgoTrip placed him as #1 producer all-time, and I can't really argue that. He seems totally overlooked now.

Kane is an all-time great no question, but I felt Kool G and Big L had a similar style and flow that begged for a poll showdown.

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 18:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Pretty unfortunate to be using 'bit he only made 1 good album' against L, it's not like he had an opportunity to do as much as G Rap. I think I only voted against G Rap because the homophobic stuff knocks him down a peg or two in my mind, if it wasn't there he'd be up there with the best.

Would totally vote for him over Kane though (on the basis of their own records - G Rap made albums of classic material, Kane made some classic songs scattered between being a boring lothario. If you factor in who what they ghosted it becomes more of a tough decision.)

Samuel (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 18:29 (fifteen years ago) link

gonna go out on a limb here and say Big L was homophobic, too.

it's seems kinda unique/unusual to me that Kool G Rap constantly refers to himself as having an old lady/kids in a lot of his rhymes, like he's the "family man" version of the gangsta. Snoop, Cube, Eazy, Quik, these other early guys are all pretty obviously teenagers, but G Rap always comes off as older/more world-weary. he isn't just some dumb kid hanging out on the corner

i was listening to both of L's records in the car today and realized he's kiiinda one-note with this flow, i mean he does it so well and he was a great writer but i always felt like he wasn't terribly flexible in that regard, sometimes he could get realll wordy and kinda come off the beat momentarily
