I've come to think that Pitbull track is the most fun pop hit of this year. Foxx is good too, could do w/o the rest, haven't even heard the Miley.

hood acumen (The Reverend), Thursday, 8 October 2009 06:02 (fifteen years ago) link

some good songs here. "blame it" is my #1 of the year but i was really rooting for pit to hit #1 so i'm gonna vote for that. also yes it's a remarkably fun song, the verses are mad lol & carefree.

drake is also def in my top 10 and miley might be too. taylor song is dope. could do without jay.

also really shocked that it took pitbull until this joint to figure out that he could invert "cockpit" to "pit's cock"

best time for the Pitbull track is when you are dancing with someone you really want to blap and singing it back and forth with that person

"blame it" just edging "you belong with me" - the latter is, incredibly, only like the 5th or 6th best song off taylor's album.

they're all good pop songs except the jay-z though.

I feel like I should love the Pitbull song, but I can't stand it. Tempted to vote for "Run This Town" just because of the unintentional hilarity of Ye's verse (there was a very flat-chested girl in my high school they called "bee stings") and Rihanna's hook. Really though, Ms. Swift deserved that number 1 spot.

The Pitbull song is so much fun when it comes on the radio, but I think making number 1 would have drawn undue attention to its slightness.

Tim F, Thursday, 8 October 2009 13:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Taylor just over "Blame It" and Miley. I can't figure out why that Pitbull song annoys me so much. Was OK with it when it first came out and now I almost always change the station when it comes on.

this is kind of amazing, three of my absolute favorite singles of the year are up here. gonna have to go with taylor over foxx; i prefer the nicki minaj version of "best i ever had" so that works against it. pitbull, miley and jay are all boring 5/10s

Am I the only one annoyed that the title isn't "I Got a Feeling", but rather "I Gotta Feeling", which is ungrammatical even taking account for the colloquialism?

xp: "Hotel Room Service" is so annoying and awful

hood acumen (The Reverend), Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:23 (fifteen years ago) link

i always notice it but it never really annoys me. when there are a hundred other songs out there already called "i got a feeling" and "i've got a feeling" it's kind of shrewd to come up with a more unique variation imo.

some dude, Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't mind "boom boom pow" but "i gotta feeling" sucks and i don't get why the mazeltov bit is meant to be so good. weirdly for such a wilfully obnoxious group their album is just...solid, vaguely hooky but not particularly memorable or charismatic pop.

lex pretend, Thursday, 8 October 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

The thing that makes the "MAZELTOV" part so great is Fergie's cracked-out "DRANK!" that occurs right before it.

Is there a reason we're all supposed to hate "Run This Town" btw?

Tim F, Monday, 12 October 2009 12:42 (fifteen years ago) link

'imma be' is a perfect example of the vague cynical/selfdeferential processes that come across to me as forever going on in the mind of will i am. (i'm not saying the switch in the middle is a pinnacle of avantitude or that will i am is some sort of fascinating, marmoreally inscrutable secret auteur, but he's just interestingly difficult to psychoanalyse compared to your average innit.)

xp in a popchart context nah not at all really; in an irritated haze of thwarted history of jigga kinda tedium i can fathom it. are you more at a "oh nice, jay has a new album out i shall get round to checking that" stage? tbh i tend to have it down as a rihanna song anyway.

r|t|c, Monday, 12 October 2009 12:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Exactly it's a rihanna song, I barely notice jay on it.

wait do you like "imma be" or hate it?

Tim F, Monday, 12 October 2009 12:59 (fifteen years ago) link

even as a Rihanna song it kind of sucks though imo, like 30% of the song is just her going "heeeeeeey" in the dreariest way possible

erm the first half of 'imma be' i find stupefyingly useless, but then the drop is like um whoa and by the time i'm hmmm-ing at end of it i can't really remember where i was on the page. i...guess... that means i like it?

As both a Taylor Swift stan AND an occasional Miley defender, I can still say that it is insane that "Blame It" didn't win this. IT WAS SUCH A DESERVING #1. As much as I might like "You Belong with Me," it's not a #1! And as for Miley, now that this exists I can stop listening to her version altogether:

but wait, no, someone needs to explain why that taylor swift single is any good, in their opinion.

to me:
1) the melody is played
2) the sentiment is played
3) it is written for people who live in the exurbs and drive SUVs.

there is nothing redeeming about the song. i admit that some of my bias towards the other people on this list is mostly because, well, any sort of hip-hop/r&b/contemporary stuff is fine with me. tayor swift is contrived to the max. it's like putting walmart to your ear.
