Hard to pick between Handle With Care and Last Night. I'll have to flip a coin.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 October 2009 23:46 (fifteen years ago) link

"Tweeter and the Monkey Man" is my favorite Springsteen song.

I think "Heading For The Light" is the only one I don't love - it's still good, just doesn't have the weird alchemy exhibited in some of the others.

Not Alone Anymore narrowly over Handle With Care

Congratulations, wonderfully bitter, and yet humorous.

"Heading For The Light" is essentially a really good Harrison song, which is superior to "Congratulations," essentially a solo Lynne song.

"Congratulations" a Lynne solo song? Pretty sure Dylan is the main guy behind that song -- he even played it live a few times. Anyway, what a great album, no idea what to vote for.

Voted Handle With Care, a very emotional song.

"End Of The Line" is for me better than "Handle With Care". Some strong cuts on the rest of that album too - love "Last Night" and "Heading For The Light".

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Friday, 9 October 2009 10:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I don't know what to vote for either. My knee-jerk reaction is "Handle With Care", but even though I listened to this album within the last month I think I need to relisten to say for sure...or at least to say something interesting about one of the non-singles.

love this whole album but i voted for the song for which i named myself

congratulations (n/a), Friday, 9 October 2009 12:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Hell of a record. Someone on ILX somewhere said that Orbison's "I'm so tired of bein' lonely..." on "Handle With Care" managed to pack everything great about his career into fifteen seconds (or words to that effect)...which is hard to argue with. I really don't dislike a single thing on here, and this is a record where the songs being slight sort of works in their favor - so I'd have to be a real frump to complain about how "Rattled" is kind of silly, etc.

Think I'll vote for "Margarita" since it probably won't get any votes, I like the "wang a langa" vocals, and "She wrote a long letter / on a short piece of paper" was my mom's favorite line on this thing.

"Tweeter and the Monkey Man" was the first time I ever heard "hell" on a record.

"Last Night" always made my 10-year-old self giggle.

Not Alone Any More. Roy Orbison's best moment on this album.

gman59, Friday, 9 October 2009 22:05 (fifteen years ago) link

In addition to what's been said here already, I wanted to add that the sequence of "Not Alone Any More" (spotlight on Roy), "Congratulations" (spotlight on Bob), and "Heading For The Light" (spotlight on George) is excellent. Roy's voice is eloquent on "Not Alone Any More", and I love the doo-wop-style arrangement, so I'm voting for it.

The Harrison solo on "Congratulations" is perfectly poised.

i knew this had to be a Polanski poll. must re-listen...again. pretty much love the whole dang thing, tho. i really dug the docu-makin'-of-the-album that was included in the rerelease, too; definitive proof that Roy could outsing/outcool/outlive 'em all in his sleep (almost literally at that).

And the other Wilburys knew it too.

The most incredible thing about this album is how gentle and laid back it is, especially given its pedigree. Who would have ever imagined a group with Harrison, Orbison and Dylan being so easy going? Or, with A-list b-listers Petty and Lynne thrown in, so good?

How awesome would it have been had Dylan and Springsteen dueted on "Tweeter" a couple of years ago at Giants Stadium rather than "Highway 61?"

LOL at Harrison in that YouTube clip: "You know, in my old band, I never really wrote with the other people in the band." = GIFT FOR UNDERSTATEMENT
