i like it, but it's a little straightforward. like she's joined the hold steady or something.

Better that than the Animal Collective. Good for her, writing a straight-up guitar rock song. Those are in short supply.

It's like a Sleater-Kinney outtake

an old one

Song is decent but the initial press materials indicated the album was gonna be more varied in instrumentation than the S-K stuff, with emphatic turns of phrase about "motherhood," "maturity," etc. so maybe this is a fake out? It also begs the question, why not just get Sleater-Kinney back together if this is the kind of material you wanna do? I think everyone's waiting on that.

Oh come on. It's better than that.

hmm, so the record is ... ok. the comparison i'm leaning toward is "mick jagger solo album."

i.e., good enough to make me remember how great the band was. and to wish i could hear the best songs on this played by sleater-kinney instead of this sort of humdrum band.

ok, i've warmed up to it. there really are several good tunes. but the band and the arrangements are still pretty meh.

Giving the album a first listen now - first two tracks are ace. Corin's voice was always my favorite part of S-K, though.

It's petty of me, but I can tell exactly which songs were written for inclusion in Twilight: New Moon, and I'm finding it a bit depressing. Corin Tucker Twilight songs...idk this feels like the stuff S-K railed against in earlier times.

But I'm enjoying the sound of the rest of the album and going to see her live tonight, so we'll see.

two weeks pass...

Just saw her live in Boston and she really blew me away, way more than I expected. All the album tracks sounded twice as good live. Corin's vocal range/control is perhaps the best I've ever heard from her, especially as she tore through two covers (Au Pairs "It's Obvious" and "Pylon's "Cool").

New track from the upcoming album up at Pfork: http://pitchfork.com/news/46994-listen-new-track-from-corin-tucker-of-sleater-kinneys-new-band-groundhog-day/ . Sounds a LOT more S-K-ish than the first record did.

Just now seeing the year-old post re: Pylon cover. There's a couple vids up on youtube. Yay Pylon, yay Corin!

Good to see Corin back at it. Wild Flag's fun, but Carrie's Patti Smith impression is hit-or-miss and I can't get into Mary Timony's nonsensical lyrics.

Also, I once drove an hour to Pomona to see Corin solo and got the start time totally wrong so I only caught her last few songs. But that cover of "It's Obvious" she did was totally worth it.

I am kind of loving Corin as Poly Styrene.
