Best of Bob Seger's Pre-Night Moves Studio LPs

Not counting Live Bullet b/c that would obviously win (I think?). These are the eight studio LPs that preceded his commercial breakthrough (and this obviously doesn't included the beloved early singles.) Occasioned by the fact that I just bought a copy of Seven, to which I am listening now. What do you think?

when I started college in Michigan (fall of 76) the ubiquitous album in the dorm was Live Bullet. I was astounded cause back in Ohio the album du jour was Frampton Comes Alive. Bob Seger I dimly remembered from "Ramblin Gamblin Man" on AM radio years before. moral of the story: this guy was strictly a local hero/regional phenomenon until Night Moves.

I've heard the first three and Back in '72. Out of those, I'd go with Ramblin' Gamblin' Man.

I haven't even heard all these! And only now own four, I think. Gonna vote Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, though it's real possible I'd switch to Mongrel or Back In '72 if copies fell into my lap. Used to have Mongrel; no idea why I would've gotten rid of it. It has "Lucifer," for God's sake! Think I'll dig out Seven and relisten this week. (Also have Beautiful Loser -- which I'm Detroit enough to not technically consider "early" Seger, but which sort of disappointed me when I played it earlier this year -- and, on a CD reissue, Smokin' OPs -- the song selection on which has never made any sense to me at all.)

...by which I mean his choice of cover songs has always hit me as just about as boring as stupid people always think Seger is, so I've never really been able to get past it, no matter how good some of the performances might be.

Compared Beautiful Loser to some early John Cougar LP last year:

Seger's similarly verge-of-breaking-out-of-the-Midwest '75 Beautiful Loser, which I played for the first time in a long time last night. I guess "Katmandu" and "Nutbush City Limits" rock harder than anything on that Coug LP, but decades later I still can't force to care about them much. And Seger really sounds sorry for himself across the whole record; it's kind of hard to take. (Also, is "Black Night" about hard drugs? Seems like it might be. If so, I kinda don't wanna know; it'll wreck my image of the guy.)

Please come join me on my new thread: "Stupid People Coming to Terms with the Fact We Find Bob Seger Kind of Boring." (Xhuck--just having some fun.)

I agree re. Beautiful Loser; I got it a couple of years ago after getting blown away by Night Moves & just didn't feel it beyond the singles. Other than that one, I've only heard the debut & Mongrel & I'll vote for the debut.

Mongrel for me.

I own all of these except Seven. Which I've still never even heard! need to check that one out. I can say that Brand New Morning is really bad. Really REALLY bad. Totally missable, take my word

as far as Beautiful Loser, i kinda get the criticisms, but I still dig it. "Jody Girl" is my favorite cut

^^ and yeah, this sums up *perfectly* my feelings about Smokin' O.P.s, such a terrible choice of songs, even though it kinda rocks

Back in '72 (1973) is one of the best names for an album ever.
