Semothy first gained attention in 2007 after working closely with old friend Plan B on a bootleg Mixtape called Paint It Blacker [1]. tbh weatherall has forsworn techno and now only makes music w/ amplified harps, dulcimers and cubase

these things should go hand in hand. 17 year olds aren't just corny indie fuxxors anymore, the only real breakdown is those who don't listen to anything v. those who'll try anything v. those who read kerrang.

The NME covers dubstep all the time now. It's basically like drum and bass or IDM c.95-98 as far as indie crossover goes.

Grime too actually. I don't think they'd be able to fill it with wall-to-wall guitar bands any more and still expect anyone in their target market to buy it.

Ross RObinson is the guy that did the new Klaxons, and it's actually pretty enjoyable imo and not the total disaster I was expecting. Think he comes from nu-metal though - Korn & Slipknot iirc?

Beck did a great job on the Charlotte Gainsbourg album. Can't stand his records but that one was gold.

Ross Robinson is responsible for most of the shitty sounding metal albums of the last 15 years but he was ok on the atd-i album, and he produced the cure i think too.

Duh, have just twigged who Steve Mackey is, but didn't know anything about his productions (MIA, FATM).

mackey's productions are competent and entirely unremarkable. which kind of puts him ahead most of the others on this list tbh

It's not that :o - most of them are pretty sought-after and producing massive artists. More so than Funkystepz or Benga or whoever.

the way these producers work is pretty diff to how a benga or skream produce though

yeah I mean even though it's an NME list I still assumed it was going to be at least primarily 'producers' in the sense associated with electronic/club music, rather than 'guys who are hired to record a band and make them sound good'... most of these names I either don't recognise, have no idea of their producer credentials (Beck?) or in a few cases am automatically turned off by

ehh, i dunno about this. it's the nme (not a zing, im just saying). it sort of makes more sense for it to mean 'dude who produces other people' rather than 'dude who makes music'.

sorry yeah I just meant in terms of how I think of the word, which I didn't make clear... that said, if (if) that list is a an accurate summation of 20 bigshot producers of 2010 it doesn't say much for the legacy of good and bankable rock qua rock knobtwiddlers, insofar as most of 'em are also dance producers/remixers/dudes who ~make beats~ (eg Geoff Barrow)

like even Ross Robinson is presumably mainly on there because he just did NU RAVE HOPES the Klaxons' second album (which I thought sounded horrible, but I basically hate them so accept that I might not have listened w/ wholly unbiased ears)
