Cults : Cults

I think this might get tonnes of drooling praise but don't let that put you off! Great songs, fun and catchy. Someone has finally pulled off the girl group sound without making something which sounds like a weak pastiche. Anyhow will there be as many people that dislike this as like? I expect so.

Hinklepicker, Monday, 6 June 2011 05:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, this will be a divisive record in 2011...IF people still care about it in three weeks.

I like it. In my car, anyway.

its been streaming on npr for the last few weeks. kinda surprisingly solid all the way through. Lotta love for Walk At Night and esp Bad Things.

Cosmo Vitelli, Monday, 6 June 2011 07:45 (thirteen years ago) link

This has so much more teeth compared to something like The Pipettes. Is that a fair comparison? Cults only has the one singer right, so maybe not fair. Anyhow I can't get You Know What I Mean out of my head. It also doesn't just seem to be three or four good tracks and the rest filler. All good so far.

Hinklepicker, Monday, 6 June 2011 09:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I like this. They're like a less mental/more '50s do-wop Sleigh Bells, really. Love "Never Heal Myself".

Hippocratic Oaf (DavidM), Monday, 6 June 2011 09:42 (thirteen years ago) link

gosh as far as p4k bands go they make some really beautiful sounding tunes. "you know what i mean" is wonderful, and what a voice she has.

cute fascist hardass (zachlyon), Monday, 6 June 2011 18:23 (thirteen years ago) link

gag

also, they look just like Civil Wars. They probably share a 'stylist.' 8.5? Fish in a barrel these days, I tell ya.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Two young white people, one male and one female, with long hair? That's not really a 'style'.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

not too shabby.

I kinda feel like this is a perfect example of an album with a bunch of great songs, but rather underwhelming when taken as a whole. There are a few on here that will really sound great on shuffle or dropped on a mix, but by the second half of the album the "prettiness" (for lack of a better word from my tired brane right now) kinda washes over me.

Loving this. Perfect 60's leaning pop music that's consistent that whole way through. I third the love for 'You know what I mean'. This track is great too:

I feel like this band is Vivian Girls for 2011; the album's really enjoyable to listen to right now, but there's nothing exceptionally unique or fresh about this band that's going to make them last very long.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cults_(band)

notice dudes surname
now think: wait, do they mean O'Blivion?
can't be, that's a ridiculous surname
then it's gotta be oblivion
wait
thats fuckin impossible

kelpolaris, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 08:01 (thirteen years ago) link

homage to Oblivions?

andrew m., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Brian O'Blivion is a character from Videodrome.

I'm confused now about the Richard Swift thing. Did they just rip off his song but give him a credit after the fact or what?

three weeks pass...

so i listened to this thing for the first time tonight via Spotify. not what i was expecting at all, i thought it was going to be more of a noise album (probably the cover art more than anything). it's very good and can see it breaking into my top 10 for this year.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link

this album sits very nicely alongside my joy zipper collection

mark e, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 10:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Ohh, is that right? That's a recommendation I cannot let go unnoticed. Will try out Cult, I love Joy Zipper.

Vaginalogue Bubblebath (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 10:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Are Joy Zipper still around? Don't think I've seen an album from them in years.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 10:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Supposedly they are still around, but from their myspace I get that they've only been trying to do a cover of a Smiths song? And are "working" on that for a year already?

Vaginalogue Bubblebath (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 10:44 (thirteen years ago) link

no idea if vin-n-tab are actively working on material.
they got married and seem to be taking a break from music.
and yes, the cults album does indeed hark back to the JZ sound re layers, harmonies and electronic touches.

mark e, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 12:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Awful, awful, awful music.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 13:46 (thirteen years ago) link

It's nice enough, and I'll probably play it quite a few times over the next month or two, but I can't see myself ever being excited for any more music from them.

I listened to their second album at work the other day, it's surprisingly strong. They released a third one late last year to almost no reaction at all.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 4 April 2018 15:28 (six years ago) link

Haven’t heard 2 or 3 - probably should! Funny how two of the songs are total shangri la rip offs

They are playing at the Chapel in San Francisco in December, which is a small-to-medium-size room, if anyone is interested. I saw them at the there last year, and it was great!
