Cults : Cults

I think this might get tonnes of drooling praise but don't let that put you off! Great songs, fun and catchy. Someone has finally pulled off the girl group sound without making something which sounds like a weak pastiche. Anyhow will there be as many people that dislike this as like? I expect so.

Yeah, this will be a divisive record in 2011...IF people still care about it in three weeks.

its been streaming on npr for the last few weeks. kinda surprisingly solid all the way through. Lotta love for Walk At Night and esp Bad Things.

This has so much more teeth compared to something like The Pipettes. Is that a fair comparison? Cults only has the one singer right, so maybe not fair. Anyhow I can't get You Know What I Mean out of my head. It also doesn't just seem to be three or four good tracks and the rest filler. All good so far.

I like this. They're like a less mental/more '50s do-wop Sleigh Bells, really. Love "Never Heal Myself".

gosh as far as p4k bands go they make some really beautiful sounding tunes. "you know what i mean" is wonderful, and what a voice she has.

also, they look just like Civil Wars. They probably share a 'stylist.' 8.5? Fish in a barrel these days, I tell ya.

Two young white people, one male and one female, with long hair? That's not really a 'style'.

I kinda feel like this is a perfect example of an album with a bunch of great songs, but rather underwhelming when taken as a whole. There are a few on here that will really sound great on shuffle or dropped on a mix, but by the second half of the album the "prettiness" (for lack of a better word from my tired brane right now) kinda washes over me.

Loving this. Perfect 60's leaning pop music that's consistent that whole way through. I third the love for 'You know what I mean'. This track is great too:

I feel like this band is Vivian Girls for 2011; the album's really enjoyable to listen to right now, but there's nothing exceptionally unique or fresh about this band that's going to make them last very long.

so i listened to this thing for the first time tonight via Spotify. not what i was expecting at all, i thought it was going to be more of a noise album (probably the cover art more than anything). it's very good and can see it breaking into my top 10 for this year.

Supposedly they are still around, but from their myspace I get that they've only been trying to do a cover of a Smiths song? And are "working" on that for a year already?

and yes, the cults album does indeed hark back to the JZ sound re layers, harmonies and electronic touches.

Awful, awful, awful music.

It's nice enough, and I'll probably play it quite a few times over the next month or two, but I can't see myself ever being excited for any more music from them.

I listened to their second album at work the other day, it's surprisingly strong. They released a third one late last year to almost no reaction at all.

Haven’t heard 2 or 3 - probably should! Funny how two of the songs are total shangri la rip offs

They are playing at the Chapel in San Francisco in December, which is a small-to-medium-size room, if anyone is interested. I saw them at the there last year, and it was great!
