i want my hair to be long without extensions

This isn't so much a style q, but as we don't have an I Love Supplements board (yet!!!!!!!!!!!!) I thought I'd post it here.

Basically, my hair won't grow longer than it is right now. What can I do? I take crazy biotin and it helped a little, but more in the department of making more new hair grow, not the hair that is already there grow longer. What am I supposed to do, trim it more often or something? Are some people just destined to have shorter hair than others?

i do think that trimming semi-reg makes it grow faster. my hair def grows the most in the first 3mo after a cut

it would grow better in seattle.

in portland, mind, we don't have the radioactive hair-growing isotope whatever you'll find up north

rox yr hair is kind of curly, yeah? so i imagine it looks like it's growing a lot slower than a straighty like me or tza

Just had to come round with the logical explanation, didn't you?

tehresa, Sunday, 4 October 2009 07:57 (fifteen years ago) link

thats a good point justine but i swear it is just SOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW

also i do straighten it often, and monitor its progress in that mode also

e\m/ily (roxymuzak), Sunday, 4 October 2009 11:02 (fifteen years ago) link

as sad as this is, i think it is also a fact that some people's hair will only grow to a certain length. i say: fuckit, just try out extensions.

DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Sunday, 4 October 2009 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i have also been trying to grow my hair longer for a long long time and it doesn't seem to get any further than maybe 4-5 inches below my shoulders. my hair is naturally curly too but i think its more the breakage from straightening and blow drying every day thats the problem. if i ever get the money im getting extensions for real.

ahh the horrifying truth from treasured locks blog:

Q.) is it true that your hair grows at a certain length depending on your genetics? because i have been keeping my hair in braids and caring for it and dieting but it has stayed the same length year after year! its right below my ears and no longer than that it never gets longer.

A.) Maximum hair length is a combination of a couple of factors; the rate at which hair grows and the rate at which it falls out or breaks off. The rate at which hair grows is determined partly by genetics. Hair goes through various stages in its life cycle. If it’s breaking off as fast or faster than it’s growing, it will never get any longer. Hair breaking off is also partially determined by genetics. The more brittle hair is, the more likely it is to break off.

Even barring the hair breaking off, it will only reach a certain length. Once hair reaches a certain point in time (not length) in its life cycle, it is shed. There is a maximum length any person can grow his or hair to. That (theoretically) would be equal to the growth rate times the length of time in the growth part of the life cycle. The growth phase can be (on average) from 2-6 years. For example, if the growth rate were 6 inches per year and the growth part of the life cycle were 3 years, the maximum length your hair could possibly get to would be 18 inches. After the growth phase, the hair goes through a shorter transitional phase (a few weeks, then goes into a shedding or resting phase (also a few weeks). The hair is shed and the cycle begins again.

To get your hair to its maximum length, you need to minimize breakage. This involves proper nutrition to make strong hair. And it requires proper maintenance so you don’t weaken the hair after it’s been developed. And, you need to maximize the growth rate during the growth phase. Nutrition and products that help with scalp health can help you maximize the rate of growth.

Do these things and you can achieve the maximum hair length possible for you. But, not everyone can grow hair down to the floor.

extensions it is

e\m/ily (roxymuzak), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:19 (fifteen years ago) link

actually, i put avocado oil on my hair today and straightened it for the first time in forever, and it actually looked approx an inch longer than the last time i straightened it out. so that's something.

e\m/ily (roxymuzak), Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:20 (fifteen years ago) link

hair lady told me i should condition with olive oil every few weeks.

tehresa, Sunday, 4 October 2009 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

they recommend that for babies/toddlers too

^^ same here. my hair grows too fast, but maybe it's relative.

sarahel, Saturday, 30 October 2010 22:38 (fourteen years ago) link

occasionally i feel like that freakishly hairy guy in "Fur" - that sorta-but-not-really Diane Arbus biopic, not that i have hair growing on parts of my body that aren't supposed to grow hair, but because i shed a lot.

i wore a wig last night and it was FABULOUS. i wish i had that much hair all the time, it felt like...i dunno, it felt magical.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Sunday, 31 October 2010 15:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Wigs always look better than normal hair because they have all this VOLUME! My hair is generally quite flat so I kind of wish I could wear a wig all the time.
