i recently showed this, the greatest movie ever made, to my 17-month-old daughter and she’s become obsessed with it and watches it over and over
which means i can no longer deny the obvious: the catbus has catballs

If you haven't already seen it, urgently seek out Pom Poko for more on this Ghibli subtext.

Prominent scrotums are an integral part of tanuki folklore, and they are shown and referred to throughout the film, and also used frequently in their shape-shifting. This remains unchanged in the DVD release, though the English dub (but not the subtitles) refers to them as "raccoon pouches".
I can just imagine the brainstorming session.

The Totoro and US Politics threads are on a similar vibe right now.

(maybe the swinging tanuki balls song is in Pom Poko, can't remember where I first heard of it, in which case apologies)

I just asked my wife to confirm that my daughter's catbus plush (purchased in Japan) has balls but she (Mrs. Brocolli) replied that it does not.

Has anyone seen the featurette short set in the Totoro world that screens occasionally at the Ghibli museum? I looked for a copy online but there only exists beyond hilariously low-def quality. You'd figure with those HD spyglasses someone would upload a better copy but this is all I could find:

I have only seen the low-quality bootleg. To my knowledge it's only shown at the museum.
My niece was obsessed with the feature movie when she was 3-4 years old, especially the bus stop scene. Something about the movie really appeals to young children.

Which dub?
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 13 December 2019 20:27 (five years ago) link
the one i know is the one that was on the clamshell vcr tape. they did another one?
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 14 December 2019 05:40 (five years ago) link
they did one in 2005 with dakota and elle fanning as satsuke and mei, which i assume is later than the vcr dub?
― Receive Your Simulated Fluids Before The End of The Year! (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 14 December 2019 08:53 (five years ago) link
oh yeah, you're right. I have see the fanning dub; it's pretty good too!
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 14 December 2019 17:09 (five years ago) link
a dub that was 100% a boombox recording of me repeatedly farting into a tin bucket would only slightly tarnish the magic of my neighbour totoro tbf

you're describing the kiki dub imo
