ok just watched back to the future 2 and i have a lot of questions. honestly, i feel that, like the bill & ted franchise, after a serious and somber treatment of time travel as featured in the first installment, this fast and loose anything goes attitude is way too cavalier and really is a disservice to time travel. why is doc brown ok with altering the future to prevent marty's kid from going to jail, but is against marty having the gambling book? i feel george carlin would've been ok with this btw. also, the dvd extras features a video of "power of love" -- but huey lewis and the news are not featured at any point in back to the future 2. also, why can't doc brown just use his time machine to come back from the wild west to rescue marty from 1955?

there's just a lot of things going on. also there is this thing, found on the internet:

Robert Zemeckis describes the message of the movie as a lesson about the use of information about the future. Information about the future can be dangerous , when it is used to change the world to negative results.

a good lesson to be learned. i hope that zemeckis also will tackle the topic of the dangers of hanging out with cartoons.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Saturday, 17 January 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago) link

also -- marty leaves the hoverboard in '55 -- i feel that this technology is even more valuable than the gambling book.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Saturday, 17 January 2009 03:30 (sixteen years ago) link

FURTHERMORE: what the fuck was crispin glover doing that was soooooo important that he skipped this one? gotta go be creepy?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Saturday, 17 January 2009 03:30 (sixteen years ago) link

i just recently watched a double feature of "definitely, maybe" and "any given sunday" both of which i think bring up important issues to think about

definitely, maybe is the kind of movie where one of the characters says the title of the movie as dialogue while wearing a ridiculous short kilt at a rooftop party in 1992. also u can really tell it was a romantic/comedy/mystery written by a guy because when he tells superhot girls to stfu they dont find this to be a total dick move but instead fall deeply in love with him. i mean, maybe all romantic/comedy/mysteries are written by dudes but this one def was and the whole "my life in NYC" part was creepy, a little.

any given sunday is a bad movie idk who made it or thought of it or learned that "frenetic" was a word and that it could be used to artfully describe a directorial style but i hate them and cameron diaz, both.

schef i wanted to love any given sunday so much that when i walked into one of the partner's offices and he was watching it i was like "dude, any given sunday! awesome!" and then we started watching it and srsly it is so terrible how can u defend the absolute retardedness of the everything in this movie?

Lamp, Saturday, 17 January 2009 03:42 (sixteen years ago) link

al pacino's ridiculous shouting performance in the last half hour is basically how i defend it -- plus drunken ann margret.

going back to back to the future: a big meta question i have is how does 2008 ski-vest velcro-shoes hipster marty mcfly even have such a bff relationship with eccentric middle-aged life-long bachelor doc brown? i guess it is kind of how i hang out with dr. morbius, except with a delorean, and breasts, but that's improbable too, if you think about it.

The Rocker on the plane back from NYC. Made me laugh a few times and an undemanding plot. Kids are all sensitive and shy and not all bon vivant, and Rainn Wilson 10x better than Will Ferrell playing a part I assume was written for him. Good plane movie.

Enjoyed this IMDB review:
If you liked "Almost Famous" or "School of Rock," then you will like this movie more. While rated PG13, the movie contains no F-bombs or sex scenes and is a movie parents can feel safe letting their teen and pre-teen children go see.
