for the 2004 season...

The Yankees don't make the playoffs.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:39 (twenty years ago) link

1. Clemens and Pettite have shitty second-half performances, Astros tank it.

2. Tigers finish third, Pudge ascends to Mount Olympus.

3. ALCS and NLCS teams are all different this year than last.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:05 (twenty years ago) link

Getting 3rd in the AL Central = getting published in a high school literary journal.

Sorry, that's not a prediction.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:14 (twenty years ago) link

Neither is that!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:17 (twenty years ago) link

and what the fuck, David, they almost had the worst record in the history of baseball last year! where were you? if they get 3rd that'd be huge.

BRAVES WIN THE EAST

Jimy Williams gets the ax, Clemens becomes player-coach!

i predict this is the year lou pinella finally has an on-field coronary.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 23 February 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

Bill Mueller will hit three grand salamis in one game: one batting left-handed, one right-handed, and one with the middle... erm.

Leee Majors (Leee), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 00:23 (twenty years ago) link

BOLD (STUPID) PREDICTIONS:
1) The Mariners will finish in last place
2) The AL Central winner will finish with a sub-.500 record
3) Ken Griffey Jr. & Randy Johnson will retire
4) Milwaukee will finish ahead of St. Louis
5) San Diego will (finally!) win the NL West
6) A-Rod will play less than 120 games
7) Carlos Beltran will NOT be traded

..and I've got more!

Differ, I made that Tigers crack more because I could than because I believed it. It was wrong, but it felt good.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago) link

Rockies pitchers to dominate opposing hitters at Coors. Shawn Estes to win 20 games.

ojitarian (ojitarian), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago) link

Randal Simon walks ZERO times, but Raul Mondesi has an excellent year as the Pirates finish 3rd in a not so close race.

Barry plays 100 or less:(

thomas de'aguirre (biteylove), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:46 (twenty years ago) link

I get it now Mr. David. All wrongs reversed.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 02:42 (twenty years ago) link

one batting left-handed, one right-handed, and one with the middle... erm
i've always wanted to see a hitter turn to bunt, but instead of knocking the ball with the side of the bat he taps it with the tip. like you would in pool.
ya - that's a deranged fantasy i will never see.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago) link

The Cincinnatti Reds will be sent down to AAA in mid May with the Louisville Bats being called up to the NL Central.

The funny thing is other than the uniforms, there isn't much difference as the Reds are mostly filled with AAA players.

earlnash, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 03:24 (twenty years ago) link

i can't believe no one has said it yet: cubs win world series (is that not bold enough?)

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 03:51 (twenty years ago) link

Not "bold", per se, John - more like "Times New Roman, left justified, double spaced". That is, it's a cliche. (And, as long as Dusty's there to monkey w/ the pitching staff, it ain't gonna happen.)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:37 (twenty years ago) link

now that's a cliche.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:42 (twenty years ago) link

by the way, i did not get gygax's pun until just now.

also david, i'm going to argue that it's not a cliche in this context because OTHER PEOPLE DON'T MEAN IT (usually - do they?)

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 04:44 (twenty years ago) link

Jeff Fassero gives up a few homers at Coors.

boldnw (bnw), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 06:49 (twenty years ago) link

John, I meant it last year (& so did my roommate), and we would've been right, damn it, if it weren't for those meddling kids. Or, y'know, for the Tom Goodwin / Lenny Harris bench love-in. Or the buttass defense. Or yadda yadda yadda throw ANOTHER pitch.

Y'know, I just realized that Differ thought my "that's not a prediction" comment was directed at the "Tigers in 3rd" prediction, when I actually meant to direct it at my snarky rejoinder. This is just to say when it comes to baseball, acting smart & quippy comes before thinking of my fellow man.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago) link

"Barry plays 100 or less:("

Yet somehow still wins the NL Homerun Crown with 52.

God damn, I had some serious splinters in my ass when I posted to this thread. Anyway, Begz, beer yeah sure - I'll buy you two, since you might need the 2nd one when Le Tigre goes 0-for-June. (Not to say I WANT them to, I'm just saying.) (I'm one bitter twee fuck.) Also - GO BREWERS!

But the dream is still alive. He is currently at .400 on the dot.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 04:51 (twenty years ago) link

Kenny Loggins has a better chance of being with the Yankees in August than Kenny Lofton.

Willis has secoind-half jitters again but still wins 20.

Joe Morgan will bemoan Oakland's inability to "manufacture runs" even as they win their first postseason series in October.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

HE (Joe Morgan) ALREADY HAS! Well, him, and a whole slew of pundits (including my roomy, who sez that's why the A's don't do squat in the playoffs, which COULD be true were it not for the simple fact that a lot of the A's hitters have poo'd themselves in October) (I think).

I swear ESPN's hiring policy for baseball analysts & color commentators (in regards to former players) is to make Morgan seem godlike, and to make HR seem like Joe Morgan. And I swear that, come August, I will stop obsessing over ESPN's baseball analysts, except for Peter Gammons, because he's rad.

Wow, my predictions sucked.

1. Clemens and Pettite have shitty second-half performances, Astros tank it.
2. Tigers finish third, Pudge ascends to Mount Olympus.
3. ALCS and NLCS teams are all different this year than last.

okay my third one sucked but it was bold. the other two I've bolded. if A-Rod hits a slump Pudge should be MVP at this point, and Pettite is having arm trouble, so I AM:PROGNOSTICATOR.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago) link

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:33 (twenty years ago) link

Santana, Radke + Nathan = does any other team in the AL have anything even close to this (not in terms of potential but rather actual performance this season)?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago) link

Schilling, Pedro, & Foulke is the closest analogue (and, yeah, I am pushing things just a bit). However, that 3rd starter (Arroyo!) might be the key.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 19:44 (twenty years ago) link

Tomorrow = Santana @ NYY... is this on national TV?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 20:01 (twenty years ago) link

There are certainly some similarities between Florida 2003 and Minnesota 2004 : young teams, came on strong in the second half, unassuming offense (or so it would appear -- MN is in the middle of the AL pack in RS), a couple of dominating starters + a reliable closer.

twenty years pass...

Not specific to 2004, but:

I've been carefully reading over a book I published in 2014, fixing up small errors so I can reupload it to Kindle. Came across this, something I wrote about Jose Cruz Jr. in a Wallflowers fanzine comment in 1997 where I compared Jakob Dylan to a bunch of sons from father-and-son baseball duos:

...it’s still way too early to say much about Cruz, but my conservative guess is that he’ll hit upwards of 250 home runs in his career--I’d say there’s a better chance that he’ll hit a lot more than 250 than a lot fewer.

He was a 23-year-old rookie in 1997--bold prediction! He ended up hitting 204 for his career, so not bad--definitely not a lot more than 250, but I wouldn't call that a lot fewer, either.
