the linked story was legally blocked in the EU so i assume keeping the text here might be questionable

it's about a celebrity in a public space several decades ago and yet it feels like a weird violation of privacy to me, and i regret the post. no one responded to it, so it wouldn't be missed, i don't think. if this isn't a kosher ask, so be it. but if i could remove this one sentence from the public record, i think it would make the public record, and therefore the world, a teeny little bit more kind.

I'm not sure it is the job of the moderators to enforce whatever prohibitions the starter of a thread tries to impose. It's enough of a job already just trying to keep up with the usual ruckus.

boy posts, both malicious and inadvertent, have been deleted from that thread for 12 years. I'm not sure that the one dedicated no-dude thread out of tens of thousands here should be made a brospace now that the threadstarter is no longer around w/ mod powers.

better solution: petition for a board mod who will commit to enforce the "no boys" rule on that thread so the other mods don't have to deal with that. It's not a small commitment whenever that thread is active to monitor it for dude posts, whether or not "boys" are actively posting.

afaict men haven't posted on that thread for years prior to this weekend's clusterfuck but you don't seem busy so maybe you could take one for the team and do it

This isn't me advocating for that thread to be overrun by men. It's me pointing out that ilx isn't set up to make that an easy job to enforce that prohibition and the mods should not be expected to take on that level of oversight on a single thread unless one or more would like to volunteer to take that on.

I mod on two other message boards already, cad, so I respectfully decline to take on a third mod position, but maybe you'd like to step up?

Aimless, the idea that the no-boys thread needs a special mod so that "the other mods don't have to deal with that" is weird. no one is actually asking for mods to sit around clicking refresh on that thread to police it - they're asking, in the "delete this post" thread, for a mod to "delete this post." they've additionally provided justification by invoking the longstanding precedent for mods to delete threads by boys barging into the "no boys allowed" thread, which i gather has been done for ages, for good reason. are you actually looking to have a discussion of "what sort of policy the mods might want to follow in future cases such as this"? why?

Every single “delete this post” request requires discussion among moderators, and then the appointment of a new sitewide moderator, to handle this and any future post deletion requests regarding that one specific thread. This will eliminate the difficulties involved in reading and reacting to a linked post, freeing up more time for managing ruckus.

emily - understood, but I thought the combo of jvc expressing that it was a mistake, plus having pulled all that out of hide tags, was a different context.

(I'm loath to create additional obligations for the mods, per se, but the advent of hide tags might prompt further precedential discussion generally: just as pulling 77 content onto the public board is frowned upon, it might be a bad idea to normalise open-posting content that other posters had hidden.)

Ah, I hadn't realised it was all pulled from hide tags. I think that is a different context, so I've just edited to your suggestion. Agree that people generally shouldn't take stuff out of hiding if they can avoid it. My reluctance was partly a "no editing without permission of the original poster" thing and partly a "there aren't enough mods to always clean up your innocuous mistakes so learn to live with them" thing, and I realise the latter sounds a bit lazy but we are very very few these days.
