ok i'll start

dear acoleuthic,

i respect that everyone has the right to their own opinions, but i feel that your claims that Vampire Weekend fits into the spectrum of "Metal" or "indie-rap" a little suspect. could you perhaps draw some comparisons to what you are hearing in their music that might clarify this position.

waiting, excitedly,
j

I am not familiar with that particular number. was it a single off the most recent album, or a one off ep?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:02 (fourteen years ago) link

also do you feel that the Vampire Weekend brings a different flavor to the backpacker/undie genre than what we might be expecting? perhaps a more urbane messenger bag vibe or undie in more of a tommy hilfiger sense?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago) link

they could do with mixing their beats a little harder, and sampling more nature documentaries - but away from these minor quibbles, their laptop glitchhop was pretty much the sound of my 2010

that was a side-project involving real africans btw iirc

so what you are saying is that they are "down", as i understand it to be said

they're not only "down", but they're also I do believe somewhat "street", my dear chum

zounds! has this revelation given you the vapours? be strong thy constitution!

vampire weekend fan (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago) link

so the big question really is where do they go from here then - i note that we are concentrating on the hip hop flavor here, but is that the direction we expect them to continue in, or will the funeral doom influences continue to rise to the surface on the next record?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I've got the feeling that a really nasty strain of Atmospheric Death is looming, if their latest EP 'Hell In Graceland' is anything to go by

i dont know if i "get" this thread but i just wanted to thank john justen for using "deep seated" and not "deep seeded"

max, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:19 (fourteen years ago) link

I think the real question here is whther the world is really ready for another group bringing the kvlt metal and backpacker communities together after the spectacular flameout of Katy Perry's move in that direction last year?

xpost no prob dude, that shit drives me crazy too

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago) link

using "deep seated" and not "deep seeded"

i thought seeded was actually correct. it's an agricultural term.

goole, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago) link

The OED defines deep-seated as "Having its seat far beneath the surface". This would make sense for the meaning of seat given in the AHD as

6a. The place where something is located or based: The heart is the seat of the emotions.

but that sense of seat is essentially obsolete, except in fixed expressions like "deep-seated".

I feel like deep seeded is more poetic

iatee, Thursday, 20 January 2011 03:39 (fourteen years ago) link

It is agricultural in origin, but in the sense of deep seated roots iirc

alcoleuthic, now that the tracks poll reaches its top ten, do you still hold out hope for a high vampire weekend placing?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:28 (fourteen years ago) link

no but I expect Contra to top five that albums shit

you were famously viewed millions of times in a youtube video which featured a loop of you yelling "CONTRA IN YOUR FACE! BLADOW!" Do you think this effort will lead to success in this poll?

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago) link

if anything it ensures vampire weekend's rock and roll hall of fame placement come 2030

seeing that JJ had actually put VW on his ballot forrealz was one of those bildungsroman moments where the world suddenly seems a much bigger and stranger place
