I LIKE KOTO-IS HE THE ITALODISCO VON LMO?

YESSSSSSSSS!!!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:46 (twenty years ago) link

You can make fun of Koto all you want. He is CLASSIC! Check out Japanese War Game. And now he's suing ZYX? This could be catastrohpic for italo-disco lovers everywhere.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:47 (twenty years ago) link

Dan Selzer,

Why do you think I'm making fun of Koto? I don't get it!?!?!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago) link

I've assumed from previous threads that his video was seen as just something that's great only it's incredible kitschy awesomeness, thus creating a great deal of ironic worship without regard to his music. So I made it my duty to, upon each mention of his name, remark that he produced some great stuff.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:03 (twenty years ago) link

i see. altho i may be more than a tad guilty, kitsch does not always mean "making fun". while i may not appreciate "jabdah" on the same level as say "ave maria" but i am certainly without doubt celebrating Koto's unique form of expression rather than belittling it!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago) link

don't get me wrong...that video is beyond ridiculous! I just assumed most comments on most threads RE: koto were completely making fun of him, and felt like he deserved a defender.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 22:11 (twenty years ago) link

and we love you for that Dan!

dean? (deangulberry), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:12 (twenty years ago) link

TIM,

What do you think of Swami Records' forth-coming Crime retrospective?

g!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:12 (twenty years ago) link

I bought a Crime CD once and was underwhelmed. I have an old bootleg 7" with "Hot Wire My Heart" and "Baby You're So Repulsive" and "Murder by Guitar" and "Frustration." Is there much more to their recorded ouvre?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago) link

the swami thing is a reissue of the semi-legit bootleg of unreleased recordings (none of the singles) that came out on Sonic Lodge/Overground in 1990. i believe some of them are even have Ricky Williams (Sleepers, Toiling Midgets, inspiration for the band Flipper's name, etc) as drummer. in their existence, Crime only put out 4 singles no LPs.

also -- tim, any idea when you will be doing the nephews cd-r you mention on your website?

love,
jc

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 16 August 2004 07:20 (twenty years ago) link

Hi Jack,

I'm glad that you asked about this! The idea has morphed into an all San Diego comp, sort of a late '80s/early '90s SD equivalent in No New York stylee. Five Nephews tracks (ca. 1991), five tracks by a really good band called Motherhood (also ca. 1991), and I'm not sure who else yet. The other bands I have in mind are Soul Brothers and either Noise 292 (that's earlier '80s) or Three Guys Called Jesus. If any of this would happen, I think it would be a really cool comp! Anyone else have any other ideas, please let me know.

Best regards,

T.

Phrase "equivalent in No New York stylee" was accidental conflation of two attempted sentences.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

Is this gonna be the same as the stuff on 'San Francisco's Doomed'? These are demos I suppose? That stuff is really good, imo.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago) link

yes, doomed is the same as doomed -- though the reish might have a couple of extra songs.

FABOUNIO Video is Really Koto, "Jabdah"
August 13, 2004 at 00:53:22:

Concerning the video at "http://guardian.planet-d.net/grouh/fabounio_no1_forever.mpeg":

The name of the group is "Koto." The name of the song is "Jabdah" (exact version unknown). Anfrando Maiola is the man playing the keyboard and jumping around.

Koto has a website here: http://www.kotomusic.com
His e-mail address: a.maiola@libero.it

Someone told me that the video playing on the TV screens on the walls of the "spaceship" is Herbie Hancock's "Future Shock," but I have no idea myself.

Despite the "I Love ZYX" bumper sticker in the "Jabdah" video, Anfrando Maiola is no fan of ZYX these days. (See the Koto website and "http://www.discogs.com/artist/Koto" for information about the lawsuit.) Anfrando Maiola is, as he puts it, "Your Friend Anfrando Maiola the real Koto."
