the louisiana acadians comp is just awesome, i wish i had it on vinyl. i think the cd version compiles both lps onto one disc. don't have the cd either, actually, just listened to it on lala.

omar little, Friday, 2 October 2009 01:05 (fifteen years ago) link

omar, i'm a huge fan of that lousiana acadians comp. i will put some cajun shit on your mix tape :)
there are still a few LPs you can order from Arhoolie pretty cheap--$10 and under iirc--"Pioneers of Cajun Accordion" is great, so are the volumes of the "Early Cajun Music" series.

ian, Friday, 2 October 2009 02:14 (fifteen years ago) link

my listening--
moon duo EP on sacred bones (dude form wooden shjips, really nice record.)
willie nelson - shotgun willie
lucinda williams - happy woman blues
king diamond - abigail
j.e. mainer's crazy mountaineers (another LP still available for $10 direct from Arhoolie.)

^^ <3 the cover, how's the music

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 3 October 2009 04:00 (fifteen years ago) link

so damn good. a lot less hip-hop and deep house than the eps, more electro-soul/boogie type jams but still the whole thing is way solidd

psychgawsple, Saturday, 3 October 2009 09:37 (fifteen years ago) link

played Jimmy Bell by 15-60-75 after seeing it posted here. interesting: there were dozens of these kinda college-town blues & booze barbands in the 70s IIRC but not too many who were influenced by the Velvets and Zappa. not sure about the horns, but I'll be playing this some more.

also digging:

"not sure about the horns, but I'll be playing this some more."

i became completely addicted to this album when i got it. i hadn't played it in a year or two, and i think i've played it 20 times in the last week or two. the three big bar bands playing around me growing up were twisted sister, the good rats, and nrbq, and i don't think any of them ever put out an album that i like as much. and i count myself as a pretty big nrbq fan. and a fan of the first twisted sister album as well.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 October 2009 15:13 (fifteen years ago) link

oh, and max creek. they were big when i was a kid too with the deadhead set. but i've never heard any of their albums. they were the pre-phish phish.

i'm playing lolita nation by game theory cuz ilx's own mike mcgoonygal was always raving about them in the pages of his magazine chemical imbalance and i bought a record back then cuzza him but i didn't like it but i thought i'd try again. it's okay so far.

the chromeo DJ kicks is not quite as good as the eskimo mix. it's also less boogie-oriented and more of a mishmash of of styles. still, i think it's pretty good.

the eagles cover is like heavily autotuned balearic synth yacht rock. i rather like it.

there's a strong vibe of phoenix hanging over the whole proceedings, if that makes any sense.

just listened to this today. super great. a lot more free than i expected. his voice sorta reminds me of ben sidran's. and the funky drums/vocals/weirdness remind me a lot of Stark Reality.

I want to find their Vertigo records, but I never see them. I might have to settle for ebay. Are they worth paying extra for?

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:24 (fifteen years ago) link

looking at ebay now, i see some decent prices. 20 bucks for lord of ages isn't unreasonable.

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

hell, they've got one for ten bucks!

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:30 (fifteen years ago) link

20 dollars isn't bad. I usually wait until I find something on chance. Texas has lots of unpicked records in smaller towns. Even in Dallas and Austin you can still find great records for cheap if you know where to look. I usually resort to ebay for ones I really want and know I can find.

Jacob Sanders, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

texas does seem great. just based on chuck's dollar record picks in austin.

scott seward, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

that heaven and earth record is great. i've got the jenny/voice in the wind 7", but heard the mp3s before.

jaxon, Wednesday, 21 October 2009 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I was so happy to find Heaven & Earth at the Austin Record Convention. I didn't even look at the price tag, which oddly enough wasn't as much as I'd thought it would be. I also found Sam Dees - The Show Must Go On lp. I'll scan the cover tomorrow. It's one of the best soul records form the 70's. If I could only find his So Tied Up/ Signed Miss Heroin 7".
