2008 is drawing to a close in fine style gaming-wise, with three games played pretty much back to back accounting for what i guess will be three of my four top games of the year - these being Dead Space, Fallout 3 and now Valkyria Chronicles. i wanted to start a thread about the last of these to see if anyone else has picked it up, but also to praise and recommend it because it deserves it and because there should be more games like this.
it's the kind of game that they used to make in the old days, when every game looked like shit so programmers had to really put some creative effort in to make their title stand out. it's also literally the kind of game they used to make in the old days, as it's basically a turn-based shooter. i had a game almost exactly like this, some Navy Seals thing, that was awesome. Valkyria Chronicles is that game except it doesn't look like shit and it's even awesomer in every department.
the basic mechanics are pretty much perfect: at once simple and complex so that it's easy to play but there is genuine strategic depth. and if you have no patience for the more complex details i'm sure you could ignore them and still have a great time with this game. it is obvious a lot of care has gone into level design and tweaking the gameplay to keep it fun and interesting allt he way through. there is a very good story with a great cast of characters that gives the gameplay context and is compelling in itself (this game is basically a complete counter-point to MGS4 in this regard, and in its intelligent use of cut scenes). and it really is a beautiful game to look at.
Valkyria Chronicles is a joy to play. i am so glad that i happened to read a review that made me think of that old Navy Seals game and decided to pick it up, because otherwise it would've just fallen off my radar, as i imagine it will do with so many people who would really enjoy it.

At first I was worried this was related to Valkyrie Profile, a PS2 RPG I tried to play ages ago but it was awful. On reading the Wikipedia page, though, this sounds much better! Sounds to be a bit like 'Ring of Red', which was one of my favourite PS2 games, but on a grander scale perhaps.I'd be interested in this if I had a PS3, but I don't... maybe a 360 port will appear some day.

ring of red is definitely an xbox360 exclusive :P

This one has been on my list - there's just so many games that have come out in the last couple of months, that it has gotten a little lost in the shuffle. I'm still definitely planning on picking it up at some point. I think the artwork looks really nice - was a little worried that there might be too much worthless story parts? Maybe later in december, maybe after a price cut...
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 1 December 2008 18:52 (sixteen years ago) link
i feel like this will get lost in the shuffle for a lot of people, which is why i wanted to draw attention to it. story parts are far from worthless. there are a lot of them but they are all short and the game tells you which ones are character-driven rather than essential to the story and lets you ignore them completely if you choose. and there is much more gameplay than story. i gladly watched them all though. in fact, there was one kind of cliffhanger where i was rushing through the gameplay section to find out what happened.

as much as I love the graphics, I have to admit that the prospect of being able to play VC anytime anywhere is pretty awesome.

don't worry about getting perfect scores the first time around, though; as far as I can tell the only way to get top ranks is to abuse broken game mechanics like a red-headed stepchild.

Finally got into the meat of the game in VC1 and oooh shit this game is good. Putting the right squad together and doing proper flanking is very satisfying. Did a very early mission where my top flank was two scouts and two stormtroopers, and my bottom flank was my tank, my engineer, a sniper, a lancer (anti-tank), and a scout. Finding the right balance between aggressive/conservative play and setting up your units properly is a fun challenge.
Also you have a pet that is a baby pig with wings! Merchandising!

I'm on a backlog kick, having picked up and beaten Infamous and had to choose between restarting this or the new XCOM. Thus far, Valkyria has been a treat; mechanics, sound, graphics, gameplay, depth are all super top notch. This does not feel like a five year old game. Still hella fresh and very addictive.

I'm playing VC1 again. I lost my save data for my PS3 awhile back and it's been fun going back through the early levels. I forgot that Largo and Rosie almost mutinied against Welkin, what nerve.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 17:53 (eleven years ago) link
I enjoyed the hell out of both and believe you should finish both, but P3P far moreso.

i haven't played the others but yeah the first game is a classic. have heard 4 is the worthy followup that 2 was not, will get around to it someday.
― ciderpress, Sunday, 24 March 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link
4 is good, it adds a little bit but it feels very true to the first game -- which is a double-edged sword because it feels like an expansion pack for a 10 year old game almost. i did get about 3/4 of the way thru before kinda drifting into some other games, did enjoy. it's a recommend if you have a gap in your playing schedule and, like, maybe don't pay $90
