I always dug this:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/Mortal_Kombat_II_for_Sega_32X.jpg

It was pretty much perfect, you know? Took the original logo, which was kinda cool, and just made it really foreboding and hype-inducing. this is back when they were still doing this mortal kombat thing right and people cared.

The best manual is for SMB2 bcz it explains that Birdo is video game land's first trans character:

"Birdo thinks he is a girl and likes to be called Birdetta. He likes to wear a bow on his head and shoot eggs from his mouth."

http://www.mariowiki.com/images/8/8e/Birdolol.gif

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 03:43 (sixteen years ago) link

Additionally, in the game's second trailer, Little Mac from Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! speaks about Birdo, calling her a "young lady," only to take a short break and ponder. His final verdict is "Depending on one's view point, she is a young lady."

it so warms my tired, grouchy old heart when people manage to use videogames in art with sincere love, not just trying to cash in on reference-points.

That's my exact problem with the scott pilgrim series, is that it feels so cash-in-y. i've only read the first two but i read them in the same way i ruberneck car crashes.

Everyone is a Jedi (Will M.), Tuesday, 2 December 2008 19:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Huh - well, I guess YMMV on that - but it's always felt convincingly loving of, and steeped in, the stuff that it uses. The matter-of-factness of the way videogame stuff shows up reminds me a lot of the way something like Ranma 1/2 works, where of course there are these sex-changing Chinese curses and eighty ex-fiancees of Ranma running around shooting fireballs and stuff.

It's been kind of funny watching people whine about the new ps3 box template on joystiqan kotaju, etc. Amusingly reminescent of the portion of Criterion fans who were really upset by their packaging redesign.

Stumbled across this ^ tonight... Found a description too, "Daichikun Crisis: Do Natural - A weird strategy game. You play some kind of cow family and have to plant and harvest vegetables, crops etc. You can buy tools and distribute them to your fellow cows which fulfill certain tasks to help you, for example with removing stones and fending of hostile monsters, which are somehow sent by an evil being, that threatens to destroy your homeland."
