OK, let's get serious now people.

If a kindly mod happens upon this thread, would you be so kind to change the thread title to TS: Diplo or The Diplomats? that's what i was going for, one or the other.

I don't really get the whole thing with calling Dipset "hipster rappers." I mean they get plenty of play on mainstream hip-hop radio and it's pretty clear they primarily go for the mainstream hip-hop audience.

Agreed. Just because they were adopted by hipster scum doesn't mean that they themselves are hipsters.

It's Rodney, assume the position! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 3 August 2006 04:26 (eighteen years ago) link

i have only been to one or two hiphop concerts in my life that have looked anything different than those pictures

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 3 August 2006 05:33 (eighteen years ago) link

people can listen to whatever they want, BUT it bothers me when i hear a white person say, "i love rap-- it's so hilarious." not that you have to sit at home and listen to young jeezy and be like, "shit. is. so. deep." but it reeks of cocoracism...

although i have a genius-type friend (1600 SAT, 20 year old starting grad school) who really does sit in his room and listen to that 3-6 Mafia album over and over again. I looked at his notes one day in class, and in huge, detailed letters he had scrawled out across an entire page the chorus to that track, "when i roll up in tha club / i'm lookin so mean" etc.. or is it clean?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 3 August 2006 05:40 (eighteen years ago) link

it bothers me when i hear a white person say, "i love rap-- it's so hilarious."

Because making "real", earnest hip-hop music *must* be a natural product of having black skin, right?

I don't think so. Race != culture.

There are a lot of black people who think rap is hilarious. Isn't that the point of a lot of these songs?

xavier (xave), Thursday, 3 August 2006 13:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Now this thread is realizing its potential.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:18 (eighteen years ago) link

"Dipset are funny" =/= "hip-hop is funny"

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Isn't "I.B.S." just one really long joke setting up a mediocre punchline?

max (maxreax), Thursday, 3 August 2006 14:40 (eighteen years ago) link

xavier OTM

and for all the h8rs upthread, exactly what is wrong with stepping out for the evening with gladrags and your freshest sneakers?

oh, wrinklepaws! (Wrinklepaws), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:04 (eighteen years ago) link

i need to change thread titles more often

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:17 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm not sure what the point of all those kathyisyourfriend photos was.

"Oh, my god, Dipset are enjoyed by attractive, young, (mostly) white city people who dress reasonably well! Cursed hipsters; they must suck!"

Note also that the folks in most of those pictures really do seem to be enjoying themselves. Hardly see that as damning evidence of anything...

Love, also, the projection implicit in the (imaginary, unattributed) "I love rap -- it's so hilarious" quote. What, we have to take all music seriously now, in order to avoid the impression of cultural insensitivity? A lot of rap really IS funny, and if that's how you wanna dig it, then fine. Sure, that can sometimes verge on soft racism, but let's keep our particulars particular, shall we?

You show me someone who ONLY listens to rap for grotesque, racist yuks, then I'm in your corner. Otherwise, let's just laugh at the funny shit, and nod our heads to the rest.

Adam Beales (Pye Poudre), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

and another thing!

Why is not acceptable for a white guy such as myself to enjoy Julez Santana dropping heatrocks, but its perfectly ok for a white person to appreciate the comedy stylings of David Allen Grier (In Living Color, Jumanji)? no one is calling him out (i assume that guy upthread is Caucasian).

food for thought.

oh, wrinklepaws! (Wrinklepaws), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:45 (eighteen years ago) link

man, i am wishing you into the cornfield now.

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:46 (eighteen years ago) link

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 3 August 2006 15:47 (eighteen years ago) link

ok wrinklednutz, here's why you get so much slack here. you're corny. this thread might have been slightly more relevant like 2-3 years ago when these musicians were putting out quality material and people here still cared about these acts.

unless you're some sort of elaborate troll created by a regular here, and well, jokes on us i guess

jaxon is tired and grouchy (jaxon), Thursday, 3 August 2006 16:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Juelz has had a few good tracks in the last year or so.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Thursday, 3 August 2006 16:03 (eighteen years ago) link

That song of his with Sizzla is real good.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 3 August 2006 18:56 (eighteen years ago) link

new theory=wrinklepaws is an ILX veteran having a little fun.

the "Food for Thought" pushed it over the edge for me. hilarious.

It is fucked up and wrong to blame the Diplomats for being embraced by hipsters. They can't help who gravites toward their sound.

Blame them for the music.

The file you were looking for could not be found, sorry for any inconvenience.

Possible causes of this error could be:

* The file expired because it was not downloaded for 60 days

* The file was deleted by its owner

* The file was deleted by zSHARE because it didn't comply with our Terms of Use

* Our server turned evil and is now rebelling against us (not likely)

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 8 July 2008 03:08 (sixteen years ago) link

well, I neglected to mention that the worst part about deadly serious '08 ILX moderation is its need to strenuously defend itself against every little criticism.
