I personally think its ballsy as all fuck, and "The Oath" is pretty catch... still generic rock, just in an overblown form, but listen to it more than most other KISS studio albums...

but listen to it more than most other KISS studio albums. That boggles the mind. "I" is okay -- if insufferaby sanctimonious -- but beyond that, it's pretty slim pickens. I think even Bob Ezrin has since disowned it.
The Kiss album I play more than any other is invariably Dressed to Kill.

Sorry for a repost, my search shit wasn't working right tonight... As for not listening to many more Studios, its just that I tend to just flip on Greatest KISS, Double Platinum, or Unplugged if I wanna hear KISS, unless its a real specific song. Honestly, Elder is enjoyable for the sheer oddity of it, if nonetheless... while shitty songwriting, I enjoy the melodies of most of the songs. I DO however find myself flipping on Love Gun, Destroyer, and even Creatures of the Night on whole at times... Don't think I've turned on Psycho Circus, Carnival of Souls, Dynasty, or any of the solo albums in 2 years...

Just when you thought Kiss couldn't be further removed from their raw rock/metal roots with 1985's lackluster Asylum, the band sinks even further with 87's popfest
Crazy Nights. Kiss was the most unfocused they had ever been by 1987 (the absence of original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley obviously had something to do with it); they hooked up with producer Ron Nevison, who had recently produced chart-topping records for Heart and Ozzy Osbourne. Keyboards had no business being on a Kiss record, yet they rear their ugly head throughout Crazy Nights — "Turn On the Night," "Reason to Live," the anthemic "Crazy, Crazy Nights" (a British Top Ten hit), and perhaps the worst Kiss song ever recorded, "My Way," are all bogged down with keyboards. Still, a song or two does contain music that would be reminiscent of the Kiss of old if it wasn't for Nevison's glossy production ("No, No, No," etc.). Rather than being a true hard rock force, a status they had begun to reclaim on 1982's
Creatures of the Night and 1983's
Lick It Up, Kiss was merely trying to replicate the hit formula of other bands of the day (Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, etc.). As
Crazy Nights displays, their lack of success in that area was dire. — Greg Prato (from AMG)

KISS may very well be the uncoolest band of all time.
And yes, Ezrin wisely denounced The Elder. Not that it's any worse than any other pile of shit KISS did.
